Merry Christmas: Family Portraits Sprinkled With Spice

This Christmas we aren't doing gifts. I didn't do cards. I didn't do an itsy bitsy teeny weeny thing. (The house was decorated thanks to Wilder's initiative. In October.) I have been working a ridiculous amount, Brian's not one for writing Christmas cards himself, etc.so..... this is going to be a different Christmas.

Instead, we're having quality family time. That's all we want, and it's been a rarity. Our presence will be our presents, and I tell ya what, I am SO excited!
Kicking off this special time, we took our annual family pictures in the studio. We all took turns being King of the Camera Remote. There were fights, there were kisses, there were scary monsters (in books) and crazy hats.

Thanksgiving: A List

My sister once told me she had an "ah-ha" moment as she was having a panic attack while trying to relax in a bubble bath. It was a stressful time and hot bubbles weren't cutting it. Instead, her head cleared and she began listing what she was grateful for. As she started a mental list of all the good things, the stress began to melt away.

She's a smart lady, that sister of mine. And, though I know it's the trend on Thanksgiving to do so, why not join the masses? I'd like to feel that stress melt away, wouldn't you?

What I'm Grateful For in 2011

Mistakes that my family has loved me through. I've learned a lot about myself this year. It ain't all pretty, but I've come out more honest and accepting of myself and others as a result.

Teaming up with creative people who are dedicated to excellence and growing their businesses. Iron sharpening iron.

My funny, loud, snuggly, dirty, water-loving, rather sassy babies.

That Waverley's hair smells like a kitten when she wakes up and it makes me happy.

The Dude of the house.

My awesome home office (that I'm sitting in as I type.)

For being a capable woman, armed with skills to go and conquer whatever the heck I set my mind to!

All the physical blessings of comfort, clothing and supplies that make our daily routine and lifestyle so much easier and more pleasant.

Netflix. Seriously.

The wondrous internet for bringing everything closer, easier, and faster.

My mother and my sister, for being my support and making my life so rich. Plus, they have more exciting lives than I do and it always makes for good stories when they share.

Today is Not Your Day.

You can't make everybody happy.

I hear that. I've heard that. I know it, but when you've got the personality of a golden retriever, the reality of that adage STINKS.

And you know that silly saying slapped on plaques and t-shirts in cheesy catalogues, the one about "I can only make one person happy today. Today is not your day,"? When you're faced with the choice, always stay with the highest stakes. If your choice is making someone at work happy or making your family happy, it should be a no-brainer, but often times (for this golden retriever) it takes some reminding.

It's hard when you're carrying a business to not sacrifice your family; something's got to give -and there's only so much you CAN give. My business turned 2 years old this month. It's flourishing, I'm learning, I love my job. It's afforded us a kind of life not possible if both of us worked away from the home full time. Still, it's a challenge -for everyone. But isn't that life? To quote a favorite movie, you must choose the lesser of two weevils.

As challenging as it's been owning a business -which I still see as very much a family-run operation- and as overwhelmed as I get at times trying be successful in all of my personal roles, I am thankful for this chance to create, seize opportunities, make things happen and be around my family as I work.

I have a good team. And I love them.

And they need to come first.

Pumpkin Flaxseed Pancakes with Spiced Whipped Cream

This morning the kitchen is featuring a tasty new recipe and I wanted to share!

Pumpkin Flaxseed Pancakes with Spiced Whipped Cream
serves 4

1 cup golden flaxseed meal
3/4 cup canned pumpkin puree
2 eggs
1/4 c Truvia (or other plant-based sugar substitute)
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tablespoon butter
1 tsp. each cinnamon, nutmeg, all-spice

Mix together and get ready for magic.

In a pan, melt 2 tsps of coconut oil. Dob dough on the pan and evenly flatten with a fork to create a pancake. On medium heat, place lid on the pan and cook each side through (about 5 min. total.) Add a bit of coconut oil in the pan for each new pancake.

Heavy whipping cream
Truvia
Cinnamon

Whip it up and liberally garnish your pumpkin pancake!
Enjoy with hot coffee and a chilly morning.
And a little Chopin.

I Love Fat

I eat cheesecake for breakfast. My coffee is filled with half & half. I eat bacon on a daily basis. I don't have cravings, I don't have energy lows, I no longer have erratic emotions. I'm 5'7" and my weight hovers around 112, even without regular exercise. What's the super secret? Nothing. It's dietary common sense that people hundreds of years ago up until the 80's knew quite well: Fat doesn't make you fat -starches, grains and sugars do.

Gary Taubes, William Davis and Tom Noughton revolutionized our kitchen. I highly encourage everyone to check out each of theses gents and their fact-based scientific research, journalism and documentaries to learn in-depth how starches, grains and sugars are the culprits in the "obesity epidemic" and our muffin-tops, not fat.

It's all about the glycemic index. Starches and grains/gluten are converted to glucose and stored as fat. They are highly addictive to your system -causing cravings, erratic energy swings and blocking your body from using fat stores and wreaking havoc on your pancreas that try to manage our insulin levels.

Fat, on the other hand, is good for us. That natural kind, at least. Animal fat, butter, olive oil, nut oil are good; synthetic oils such as vegetable oil, soy oil, hydrogenated oil are not good. Fat feeds your brain, it makes you satisfied longer, it actually lowers your cholesterol, it's all-in-all healthy for you.

Read the fellows above to learn more about how eliminating sugars, grains and starches and enjoying natural fats along with meat, nuts and vegetables will help you lose and manage your weight, balance your emotional life, eliminate cravings and leave you feeling satisfied and normal for the first time in your life. It's not a gimmick, it's science. And it's working for us.

A note on sugar. At this point, from our reading and personal research, erythrithol-based sweeteners do not effect your GI significantly. We use Truvia in our baking and cooking. You know those sugar crashes you get from eating cake or a bunch of milk-chocolate? Yeah, I don't get those any more, not even with using Truvia and eating our homemade cheesecakes, sweetened whipped cream, etc.

From our new way of eating, we don't need large portions to feel satisfied, so we're eating less and feeling satiated longer. Again, there's no gimmick or weird trick -and, no, we're not under eating.

I no longer obsess over food, count my calories, punish myself for eating dessert, feel hungry soon after eating, or experience highs and lows that I attributed to hormones. I feel normal. Finally!

The kids? Oh my goodness, their diet was entirely wheat and sugar based. Wilder wouldn't touch vegetables (except occasionally snacking on edamame) and everything he ate came out of a box or package in the pantry. Over the past month+ we let the kids eat up all the crackers, cookies and noodles. Now Wilder eats eggs and bacon, asks for celery sticks, lettuce-wrapped burgers, spoon-fulls of peanut butter, etc. We've noticed he's more emotionally balanced -and that's saying something.

So, if this science (which finally makes sense, compared to the food pyramid -the same formula used to fatten up cattle- that the FDA, the medical community and schools have been shoving down our throats the past 30 years) is bogus, then it has the best side effects of any diet or way of eating I've ever tried. These are definitely results I can live with and our family is jiving with the new balance we've found.

Wilder's Christmas Tree Birthday. In October.

Wilder turned 4 and, as previously posted, requested (read demanded) we put the Christmas tree up and for Santa to bring him presents. Since I was brought up in Alaska where often you get snow before Halloween and we couldn't help but install Christmas music in the cd disc changer from October-February, how could I resist?

Here with his nutritious breakfast of a hulk-green cupcake (icing-filled, mind you, with pumpkin-orange) which he mainly licked the icing off before Zaccai took it off his hands (hey, you leave a cupcake laying around for two hours, I'd say you aren't serious about it.)

The Kings took all the kids to our neighborhood park and Brian and I got serious about celebrating.

I think we scored.

Brian bought this train set with Wilder at the store several weeks ago, but told him he had to wait until his birthday to play with it. For DAYS afterward, Wilder whined about playing with his new train. No concept of waiting (surprise) -SO- I told him that Santa took it and was going to bring it on his birthday. This seemed to do the job. Whenever he'd start fussing to play with his train, I'd remind him that Santa took it and he accepted it. Lies are awesome.

Aunt Brooke and Co. send some really fun tub whistles that all the kids enjoyed tooting. Wilder especially. He's a rootin' tootin' kinda guy.

Aunt Crystal brought a big box of clothes for both the kids and Timmy found a rather nice ventilated hat.

Thanks to Aunt Crystal, Waverley was the birthday cheerleader. She now pulls out the outfit and says, "Pitty! Pitty!" She feels so attractive in her spiffy outfits from Aravis.

The fun continued. We loaded in the van and left Brian home with Wilder and Wesley while the rest of us took a trip to heaven, er, IKEA for shopping and lunch.
Brian and the Lost Boys took a bike ride to the park in our adjoining neighborhood, which Brian renamed the Tour de Pain since it took for-ev-er to get there. Wilder is not, shall we say, proficient in bike riding. Or big wheel riding. But, he was inspired by Wesley and Timmy's ability and since their visit has gained a significant proficiency.

After coming home from our collective adventures and family bonding, we put the short people down for naps and movies and prepped for further festivities. Namely, the PortraitBooth. Those fun shots coming up next...

Thank you so much for all of the family who made Wilder's birthday so much fun! Wilder received his box from MiMa and Boppa later that day while I was out shooting a couple session with Crystal and George (so fun!) and he and Sissy have been loving their presents. Thank you to the great-grandparents and aunts for sending cards and love, for Grandmama for her gifts and presence with us, and for the Kings who truly know how to party. We were so blessed and Wilder had the best birthday ever! Please come back next year!

Love The Ones You're With

My mother (who lives in Washington state) flew to San Diego to visit my sister and her family. Soon after arriving, my brother-in-law, George, received news from his dad that George's mother had passed away. Devastating. The memorial service was to be held in Oklahoma where Darla's family is from and within a day, the whole family loaded in the 15 passenger van and headed East, making a stop for a few days in Texas. We had 9 precious visitors and loved, loved, loved getting to be together.

I admire the heck out of my sister, Crystal, and her husband George. They live in love, joy and they make each day count, impacting lives through their relationships and sharing Jesus in the most down to earth, real way I've seen. I will never forget Crystal checking out at the Dollar store and asking the clerk who she had made friends with about how his siblings were doing, etc. They know how to love people -and we are blessed to get to be some of those folks.

They arrived on Saturday night and we settled everyone in on makeshift beds and got up bright and early on Sunday. Brian actually never went to sleep. He was prepping for a marathon he decided to do on a whim and left waaaaay before sunrise, winning 2nd in his age group. Yeah, that's my man!

We went to church, came home -the rest of the day is a blur to me, I think we went to the store- and trotted on over to Dukes for some BBQ and a chance for the kids to muck about. And it was documented. Oh! And we had a nail painting party in the driveway. All children (except 12 year old Zaccai) and Crystal and I participated. Wish I had pictures, but instead of snapping away, I decided to enjoy the moment. Sometimes you have to resist the urge to document and just let life happen.

Crystal and George are high school sweethearts, married at 18 and the best example of a healthy, happy marriage I've yet to run across. Through the 14 years they've been man and wife -and the previous 3 that they dated- it has been an honor seeing them bind together, create such a beautiful, unique family and see God's hand in their lives. It's been AMAZING, and I love them to pieces.

Wilder would not leave his beloved dirt pit and Timmy has no idea why.

Kaeli = Spunky. She is full of life, a natural thespian, enjoys instructing others and, well, basically lives on full-blast. She's one of a kind, a precious little lady and -watch out world!

We found this homeless boy wandering around. My kid will be dirty for at least the next 10 years, bet my bottom dollar.

Don't you just love boys and their attraction to sharp, pointy objects?

My Viking and the Cling-On. Waverley has been, oh, let's just say "attached." She loves being held lately. Now if only she'd let me take a nap with her, that'd be something. I miss those snuggle times -she was such an angel baby. But we're done -no reading "I wish I had more kids" into that statement. We're good. We're good.

Oh, I forgot to tell you! Wilder requested that for his birthday (Monday, the 24th) he wanted to have the Christmas tree up with presents under it. So, we put the tree up before the family came and treated each day like it was Christmas. We came home after dinner to watch "Home Alone" and play cards. That's how we roll. Christmas in October. I mean, really, why wait? We were all together, let's make the most of it!

I spent a little time tonight on the good ol' internet catching up on some of my favorite sites and I got hooked on a fashion/style site that features fashionistas' personal closets. I was reminded of a girl I went to college with -an art major named Amber- who was the pinnacle of style in the most avant-garde sense, and who I oh-so wished I could be like somehow. I may not have become an "Amber" but viewing these very personal style shoots, peering into closets of the artistic-minded, made me feel so free and, well, European, for lack of a better descriptor. I connected with the deep, very alive part of me that is creative and expressive and loves to live and be exercised. I was inspired. I was challenged. I was transported to a part of me that I want to be awake more often -every day. That "French" side of me that lives honestly, boldly, creatively and fully.

Perhaps I needed to meander a bit to find where I am. Here. In the full spectrum, color-wheel of Kelly.
Adoring and despising and creating and growing. The learning never ceases.
Perfect love casts out all fear. I want to live and give in such love.

I Married Superman

He'll cringe that I posted this, but it's true: I married a superman and I'm telling.

Bragging (and a little disgusted,) my mister runs half marathons for breakfast. Literally. He gets up in the morning, pulls on the lycra and tackles the sunrise, ten miles at a time. Today's accumulative goal: 20 miles. Did he make it? Uh-huh.

I know. I know.

Sorry, it takes a little bit to recover from the magnitude of this daily routine. Heck, he works out so much, I don't need to anymore. Quite frankly, I don't want to run after all the running he's done. And biking. Did I mention he rides, too? With five hours of sleep, he hops on his bike and does, oh, 30 miles. Then run 13 in the evening.

He. is. a. maniac. (And -ugh- does he look good.) I'm just sayin'. (Here's where I crescendo into an operatic strain about how lucky I am to be married to such a hunk.)

Brian has been out of the Army for 1 1/2 years. Most folks I've known who exit the workforce to become stay-at-home parents tend to get a bit, well, soft. Me? I got a trophy husband instead. He's even got a neighborhood nickname (I'm not telling.)
How 'bout THEM apples, eh?

Yes, yes, this has been a bit of a brag-fest on my part, but the point is: My husband continues to wow me. He has always challenged my thinking of what is possible and he has helped me stretch myself further than I ever thought possible. He continues to challenge himself and, as result, challenge me. I am inspired and in awe of his determination, persistence and patience. And that's just in our marriage, not to mention how he implements that into his personal goals.

His birthday is coming up. I think I'll buy him a cape.

Our dear friends, Lucas and Sofia, came over yesterday for some quality time with large, orange orbs. We has a fun-filled mini-session with all of our children and I wanted to share some of the ooey-gooey cuteness.

Wilder had a heck of a time allowing me to move the pumpkins to the studio upstairs. He insisted they needed to be outside by the hay bale. He finally assisted in bringing one lone tiny pumpkin upstairs as I lugged the rest of the big ones. Once the kids were all here, they quickly learned, "WOW, pumpkins ROLL! Let's see if they BOUNCE!" Uh...
Fortunately, we did not encounter any smashed pumpkins -though they were tossed. And one fell on Wilder's head while he was horsing around outside. I know it's bad, but it was actually quite hilarious to see the chain of events. Wilder sitting on top of the hay bale, pretending to loose his balance, truly loosing his balance, tumbling to the ground (complete with an aerial somersault,) and the pumpkin rolling off his body like he was a slide, ending with a bit of a "bonk" on his head. Take a bow, you have now been accepted into the circus, kid.

Fall is (sort of) here in Central Texas! The evenings are cooling off and the days are only reaching highs in the 90's instead of the 100's; time to celebrate!
We set up an autumn station in the backyard to test out some Fall concept shoots -here are some silly shots of the kids. They loved playing with the pumpkins -and I can guarantee you'll be seeing more of them soon as we dress the studio up for the season!

Welcome! We've made a few changes. Always seem to be rearranging the furniture, but it's in our blood: we're movers.

We purchased a new lens -oh, what fun!- and I tested it out this morning while capturing some new furniture configurations and a small person who kept bouncing around the house.

Brian nipped out to run in a local 5k, so I had the morning with Wilder (and Waverley, but she's still asleep.) Classical music played softly, the freshly brewed coffee coaxed me into a happy state of caffeination, and I pulled out the camera to capture a bit of morning around the house.

IKEA mat, helps keep (most of) the cars/trains in one spot. Wilder loves it.

Sorry, Try Again

About a month ago I turned Wilder on to PBSKids.org. He hadn't used the computer before and I wasn't sure how much he'd be able to do on the site. NOW I see why little kids can pick up multiple languages; their learning curve is as steep as a cliff.

Wilder is now a computer whiz. And he's picked up some rather funny sayings along with his mad skillz.

This happened about a week into Wilder's computer exploration. I was taking a break, sitting on the living room couch trying to get Wilder to hang out with me and watch one of his movies. Wilder walks in the kitchen, sits on the bar stool in front of the computer, pokes his head over the screen to yell at me while waving, "Mama, it's okay. Wilder's working. Wilder's working," and he begins to play learning games with Elmo. I wonder where he got that...

And now Wilder has a new catch-phrase. (And thankfully PBSKids.org is one polite program.) Whether playing by himself with his trains or getting one of us to help him fix something, if our strategies are not what he had in mind, "Oh, saw-y, twigh again!" It totally cracks me up -he sounds like a game show host.

(On a side note, we finally got rain yesterday and the sky is still overcast this morning. Wilder walked up to the back door window and said, "Awh maaaan, it's waining!")

Thankfully he's playing super polite computer games that teach sharing, cooperation and educational skills instead of jumping on mushrooms and defeating large gorillas (or far, far worse.) He's such a stinkin' wiz at this computer- and did I tell you he is a Mac Nazi?! If Brian or I try to use the kitchen computer for 2 minutes, he runs in from ACROSS the house and yells at us to get off, "HEY, why you do dat?! Get off! I pway PBSkids! I need PBSkids!"
Yep. Computer Nazi, but a smart one.

My two minutes are up and I don't want to get yelled at.

Date Night: It's Kind Of A Big Thing

It's been three weeks now. Three whole weeks since we started our regular weekly date night. We drop the kids off at the sitter's and then it's 5 WHOLE hours of just the two of us. So far we've tried out several Mexican restaurants and found the best margaritas in Georgetown, but what we've also found is that this whole "just the two of us" time is WONDERFUL. And much needed.

And the kids love it, too. The lovely gal who watches are wee ones has three of her own. Her 9 year old son stocked her up on Thomas the Tank Engine gear when he was little so Wilder is in heaven. Every morning after a date night, Wilder wakes up and immediately asks to go play at our babysitter's house. Particularly to play with "Spencer" -one of the Thomas characters. He's a hoot, that Wilder.

That stretch of time together is long enough to enjoy the evening and not feel the rush to "hurry up and have fun 'cause we have to pick up the kids." We have time to drive into Austin if desired, do dinner and a movie, just hang out at home, go for an mini-adventure. Who knows what the next weeks hold for our deep pocket of quality time? It's worth every penny, in my opinion, and I have loved looking forward to Us Time on a regular basis. Our weekly vacation.

You know, it wasn't uncommon for us to go three months between date nights.

One of my favorite wedding vendors, Sweet Sunday Events, asked me to sign up with Two Bright Lights, a wedding-related marketing site that connects photographers (and others in the wedding industry) with online and print publications. I originally signed up with Two Bright Lights in order to submit several shoots/weddings Sweet Sunday Events and I worked together, but now that I've discovered the ease and excitement of submitting, I admit I'm rather addicted. Since I joined a few weeks ago I've had 6 shoots picked up and featured by various national and international wedding blogs of note and I am over the moon with yippity-skippity excitement!

As I've been buried in work with little time to play or share stories about the kids (because, honestly, I don't see them much) I wanted to share some of my favorite shots from recent shoots. Alyssa's bridal portraits are being featured on two wonderful wedding websites and this shot above is one she'll have on display at her wedding next month.

Michelle and Adam's fun-filled engagement session has also been selected for another stunning wedding site -so excited to share the link when it publishes. We had a wonderful time shooting around Georgetown and Granger while dodging storm clouds.

These are vintage scooters we borrowed from one of my favorite stores in Georgetown, Rough & Ready Antiques. They're on my wish list. Every time I look at this shoot it makes me want to spend half and afternoon at that fabulous shop.

We created a bouquet from an obliging field (I feel straight out of "Sense and Sensibility" saying that) and I adore how romantic and rustic it looks.

'Tis the time for babies! It seems half the women I know are expecting and it has been a joy celebrating with so many of my friends. I did a maternity shoot with my dear friend, Aubrey, who's expecting their first in September.

And speaking of wee ones, a few peeks at a Happy Birthday session I did for Miss Caroline's 2 year old celebration!

Brian decided to take this semester off so that I can commit more time to my work; that's a really big step for us. The business is growing, opportunities continue to arise and the learning never stops. I cannot express my thankfulness that I have the freedom in this country to be self-employed and pursue what I love. We are overwhelmingly blessed!

Chic DIY Baby Shower: Welcome, Jude!

I had absolutely nothing to do with how beautiful this shower looks. I just documented it, and what a LOVELY shower it was!

Aubrey has decorated Jude's room with yellow, shades of grey, white and black so the fabulous ladies who designed her shower took color scheme (and theme -birds) and ran with it.

I adore all of the details! Hot glued branches on the table tents with the cut out birds perched on top. Even the water bottles were redone with labels printed from home. Michele from intriguedesignstudio.etsy.com is the designer and has a great shop where you can buy the printables! Check her out!

The trike diaper cake was totally rad, made by one of the organizers who also spearheaded the majority of decor projects (like the grey and yellow hanging pompoms) and games. Her name is Jessica and she's now in charge of planning MY birthday party. In July.
It's gonna be AWESOME.

The announcement wreath was made by Aubrey's sister. I love the yarn wrapping around it, plus check out the cool decoupage "Baby Jude" on the mantel that Jessica (above mentioned) also made. I felt the urge to go home and glue scraps of paper onto something.

I'm nearly speechless. This spread was so gorgeous and yummy! All made by the hostesses and the cake was ordered from a local gal -friend of a friend (something like that.)

The words of wisdom clothes pinned to the ribbon across the daddy-to-be's office doorway were not just beautiful, but touching and encouraging. As I wrote mine out, it helped remind me to put my priorities in check. Something I need to keep reminding myself to do; it's so easy to lose touch, don't you think?

This girl time did my heart so much good! I've passed on getting together with friends for what feels like (and probably is) months since if I'm not working, I'm eeking in some family time. Time with other lovely women, surrounded by such sweet things (for eyes and tummies), and celebrating my dear friend's first baby on the way -so many wonderful things!

Congratulations, Aubrey and Danny! And Welcome (soon) Jude!

I am shooting with them on Monday and hopefully they'll let me feature the maternity session here and on the photoblog -so stay tuned!

Galveston for Toddlers: Rockin' Texas RoadTrip

We left Georgetown on Thursday morning for a 4 day weekend trip to Galveston and Houston. Brian had a triathlon in Houston scheduled for Sunday so we decided to make the most of it and hit up the beach and also visit my grandparents in Houston.

My grandparents graciously endured us (as always) and fed us -and stored Brian's bike so we didn't have to tote it around all weekend. Wilder truly lives up to his name. In every way.
*Sigh and smile*

We stayed at the Howard Johnson (why do I find it extremely weird that they nickname themselves "HoJo"? Just doesn't sound good...) in the Clear Lake area. After unloading our gear, we packed back up and headed out to get some evening beach action!

We chose the family friendly Stewart Beach ($8/car) and the kids loved the clean beaches, easy surf, and warm water! The breeze made the 98 degree weather incredibly tolerable and the water was so toasty you'd have to get out to cool off.

There are miles of free beaches along Galveston Island. Of the two other stretches we ventured on (later) this was the cleanest and smoothest, but I'd take a free beach with some shells any day. Can't go wrong here.

Honestly, this is the best area we've ever been to if you want a beach experience with toddlers. Granted, we haven't been to ALL the beaches in the U.S. (or even close) but overall, we loved this place for the kids.

They loved swimming with Daddy. You can walk out into the water forever and still only be hip deep. Diving pelicans and jumping fish were highlights on the horizon.

End of Day 1. It was a good 'un.

Day 2 started with a long morning at the beach. Had too much fun to pause for pictures, so see above and imagine variations of dirt covered kiddos and parents chasing them around to keep them from getting permanently acquainted with the water.

We escaped the sun and took the FREE FERRY to Port Bolivar/Crystal Beach. Very cool, very cool.
Once again, I was enjoying the scenery and serenity of napping kids to bust out the camera. Google the area. It's beautiful.

On the ferry ride back we popped on deck. Dolphins leapt, pelicans dove, children squealed. And this mother said, "It is good."

Okay, this part was NOT so good. Wilder, who slept on the ride over, wanted to stay on the boat. Kicking and screaming, he insisted that once the car exited the ferry that we were going the wrong way. Even though he was seeing all the landmarks he was familiar with, he was certain we were on the wrong side. (He woke up the next day asking to go back on "My Boat.")

Beach time again! This was one of the free beaches. Loved it, folks! Personally, I am a fan of seashells and liked that these beaches had oodles of tiny treasures. We watched the live clams pop in and out of the sand as the tide washed over them.

Building sand castles with Wilder was a highlight for me. Of course crashing them was a highlight for him :)

As we drove back to the hotel we toured a bit and...I found my house! Like it says, I call dibs.
Just needs a little bit of work. Doable, right?

Oh, okay. Now the story gets really exciting, but I'm going to make this short. Because it's gross.
I got food poisoning and made REAL good friends with the toilet all night.
Day 3, we packed up and took the long way back around Galveston Island up to Houston. Brian picked up his registration packet for his triathlon, the family dropped me off at my grandparents to rest while they found a playland to run around at. We visited in the evening and then... it hit me -and Wilder- again. We spent the night huddled together on the bathroom floor. Besides labor, that was the closest I've felt to death. Ever.

Who wants a sandwich?

By the morning Wilder and I felt somewhat human and we visited and played at "Gamma Campaw's," as Wiley calls them. Lunch stayed with us (hallelujah!) and we made our way home.

Oh, YEAH! And Brian completed his 3rd triathlon this year. Kind of a big deal (I was too busy puking, so we weren't "Ra! Ra!" -ing, more like "Ralph! Ralph!" -ing.)
I'm so proud of him. His determination and persistence are qualities that I have always admired (and continue to learn from by example.) I love my Superman!

So, that's our exciting road trip! Told you it was going to be an adventure.
Now, it's back to work and I am so glad I had a break to get inspiration, brainstorm with Brian, and puke my guts out. Now that's what I call a vacation.

RoadTrip Bound!

Brian is giving us a mini-vacation. He's competing in another triathlon and this one happens to be in Houston, so we're making a 4-day weekend and spending one of those days dipping our toes in the ocean in Galveston. The other days will be spent with extended family -and Wilder, in anticipation, won't stop asking to get in the car to go to the beach and see Grandma and Grandpa. Makes me happy.

It's going to be tough not bringing work with me, leaving the computer and my hard drives at home. I've got plenty to do, but, honestly, it's okay to take a break. And, boy, do I need one.
I shall shed the "should do's" and embrace this time enjoying the adventure of a little road trip with toddlers, entertaining them in the back seat, making sand castles, the first two restless nights away from home as we all share a room -oh, the joys of travel! It's these bonding experiences that I love -those long talks with Brian as we drive the open road, the pit stops at all the playland's attached to fast food joints along the highway, the blessed soft-serve cones at McD's.

ROOOOAAAD TRIIIIIIP!!!
*Sigh*
Now I'm psyched.

Ah, you may be asking what in the world these pictures have to do with this post. Nothing. But, they are from today and it was a little exercise in making family priority, even though I have oodles of other work to do (and, pat on the back, I have accomplished gobs of official work today, as well.)

Time to pack my swim suit, camera and flip flops.

Hold On, There: Clarifying Goals {instead of just surviving}

I've been bombarded by hints to stop and take stock of my work, clarifying what direction I'm going and why. As a (still relatively new) entrepreneur, I'm feeling the strain of those first three years "they" (the all knowing they) say it typically takes to get on your feet. As I shoulder my plow each day, I realize the past few months I've been staring at the ground in front of me, instead of looking where I'm going, planning my field.

So... the call for clarity and goal making HAS been heard and SHALL be answered.
At least I'll give it a start (before I fall asleep at my desk.)

Oh, yeah. I got a hair cut! (Don't worry, conservative friends, it doesn't always look this crazy.)

Question: What am I doing?

Answer: I am self employed in various creative endeavors (namely photography and acting) so I don't go crazy in a cubicle and suffer Death by Office. I am exercising my artistic side daily while serving others, preserving priceless memories and doing my darnedest to make them look gooooood. (Throw in an "Awhriiight" a la Mitch Hedburg.)

Guess that pretty much answers the "why" part, too.

Question: Uh. (Long pause.)
Answer: Ah. I don't need a question to figure out my answer. My answer to this whole, "What are my goals" is this: to continue what I'm doing and keep getting better at it in all aspects. More efficient, creative, customer service oriented, upping the quality of everything (that 5% I talked about last time,) while creating more time for family and myself.

Someday I'll sew again, read (and finish) books, bake, have coffee dates, twiddle my thumbs and wonder what I should do that day. For now, though, I am stinkin' blessed to be inundated with work and have the ability to do it. Everyday I learn something new, try different techniques, look into various options. I get to grow and no one can make me stop developing, creating and trying.
And, gosh darn it, people like my work. And when I make them happy, it makes me happy.

All right motivational and business guru's, I answered my questions.
And I'm doing what I love.
I'm happy.

Upping the Ante: The Quest for 5%

Hey, can I share something? (She asked in a conversational tone.)

It started off with coffee. The topic was how to create an miraculously delicious cup o' joe and it was being discussed by my husband. First, says he, you start by using filtered water instead of tap water, creating a 5% increase (though he actually would say 50%) in the quality of the final cup. Then you select a higher quality of roasted beans (another percentage increase,) then a better filtration system, then frothed milk, etc. until you end up with the world's best cup of coffee. All of this has been done by refining several little things to create one big difference.

Yes, Brian is the King of Metaphors and I really appreciate it (because I stink at them.)

As an entrepreneur, I have been trying to apply the 5% rule in my work. Lately (as I've shared earlier) I've been focusing more on design and packaging. It's the little touches that really sell you on things, right? First off, you have to like the product/service, but how it's presented makes you ho-hum or ecstatic -I'm trying to move from the former to the latter. Here are a few of my recent "cups of coffee."

Personalization, customization and all-around design. That's what I've been integrating and I am quite pleased with the developments. Physical packaging is another thing I've been focusing my attention on, too. Carefully wrapped items tied up with bows that coordinate with their wedding colors, fancy little labels with my business name, fresh white bubble mailers instead of the silly yellow ones you buy with the duck on them. It's the small things, but shoot, they make a huge difference.

It's all about the 5%. And soon my work will be 50% better than it was 6 months ago and I can't wait to see what that's going to look like!

Taking Time to Design

The kids and I stole ten minutes before bed to snap a few pictures (again, credit goes to Wilder who had control of the remote.) After they were successfully tucked in (credit goes to Brian,) I dedicated a few short, sweet hours to working on my continued learning (and mucking about) with design.

Lately I've been moving the business into a more design-oriented direction. I want to integrate the style of each event (read "wedding") in the "packaging" of the final product -mainly how it's featured on the blog, shared on facebook and bound up in their custom photobooks I create. Check out the link to see some of the pretty things I've been cooking up!

But this picture really does say it. Creativity + caffeine + love = happy life, survived :)
I've been clocking ridiculous hours trying to catch up on all these weddings and other shoots and, I tell ya, it's really hard not to get burned out. I don't want the quality of my work to suffer because I'm drained, so today I took a day off from normal work and dedicated a chunk of hours to catching up on family things, the blog, and learning.

The past week we've been having family exercise mornings, backpacking or running our neighborhood. When we "ruck," I'll carry one of the kids in the carrier and Brian will weigh down with a gargantuan pack. During those neighborhood hikes we also have our board meetings. Our sounding board meetings, I should say. It's awesome. We're having family time, we're exercising, we're hashing out business ideas, talking about areas of growth and strategy, and we're outside. Excellence, plain and simple.

I am so thankful that I have so much at my finger tips and that we've taken the chances and made those crazy life changes that have facilitated this lifestyle. Leaving the safe haven of Mother Army nearly 1 1/2 years ago and relying on my new photography business, hoping it would hold up to our hopes -we're continually surprised by the success, major growth and satisfaction. It's definitely a joint venture; I couldn't do this if it wasn't for Brian being the go-to guy for caring for the kiddos.

Part of my break today was a family trip to the thrift store. I found this happily hideous skirt that I fell in love with (it's got pockets) and put it together with a slip and vest I found on other trips there. I am turning into a late 80's/early 90's mother and I feel no shame. Brian's eyes roll from time to time, but -hey- at least I'm not afraid to try something, er....old?

So, how 'bout them apples? TWO new posts in one day. Only took me two weeks to get around to, but I am so glad it finally happened.

San Antonio Zoo: Family Fun, Happy Hippos, etc.

Recently we took a work trip to San Antonio and stopped off at their rather splendid zoo.
Now this is the place you want to go if you're bringing the family to this neck of Texas.
For a small fee, a tiny train will pick you up for a tour of several sight-worthy areas, making stops to drop off and pick up riders. Choose the sunken tea gardens or the amazing Witte Museum, then hop back on the train to return to the zoo or Brakenridge Park -another incredibly worthy stop. It's. Gorgeous.
Ugh!

We arrived at the zoo just in time for the hippo show! The two hippos (a breeding pair, so we learned) did tricks for apples. Their tank is filled with fish; a symbiotic relationship. The fish clean up after the hippos, the hippos allow the fish to live there rent free. And they tell really good jokes.
Unlike me.

Wilder went nuts over the zebras. He's still asking to go back and see them.

The "Wetlands" section of the zoo was neato! This stone bridge had water running between from one pond to the other. All sorts of birds, ducks, geese, alligators, turtles -tons of fun!

We are still hearing about the train and the zoo. Every morning, Wilder wakes up and drags me to the door, insists I put my shoes on and we go back. We did go back again (had another San Antonio shoot) and, even though Wilder wouldn't shut up about the train, once we tried to board he kicked and screamed, refusing to get on. Same thing with getting into the zoo. Poor Brian had both the kids.
Now when Wilder insists we go to the zoo, we tell him he can. For his 13th birthday.

Besides having a neurotic (though adorable) son, this was a fabulous trip and I highly recommend the San Antonio Zoo for some family fun. Admission is very reasonable.

TopTips
1) Fill a camelback with icewater, pop it in your backpack or handbag and keep your crew happily hydrated during the scorching summer. Sheer brilliance.

2) Attend as many "shows" as you can. Fun stuff, educational, and the animals are fun to see close up and in action.

3) Wear matching or coordinating, obnoxious colored shirts. Or at least make the kids; easy to find in the crowds. Maybe pin a note on the back of each child, "Beware: I Bite Hard" -that way no one would dare take them.

I've been thinking about you so much as your birthday approached and I continue to realize the longer I am a mother just how much you have loved me through every moment in my life. Mom, I am utterly blessed to be your daughter. There's a letter coming in the mail that's as sweet and sappy -and heartfelt- as a made-for-TV Hallmark movie. I mean every word of it and you mean so much to us.

Cheap 'n Easy: Pamper, Shop & Eat Yummy For Less

Lately I haven't had much time for anything but work, but I've been learning to take breaks, have family time and refresh myself in order to prevent burn out. It's a process, but I am thankful for all the little lessons and small ways I've found to keep life well-rounded.

For those who also have small budgets and short-but-sweet amounts of time on their hands, here are a few snazzy tips and ideas I've picked up on quick-n-cheap ways to find windows of joy.

ON THE TOWN

Thrift Store Therapy
Once a month (or so) I visit my local, favorite thrift store to treasure hunt. The Caring Place not only has excellent prices, but also a lovely selection from kids toys, furniture to clothing. My closet is slowly filling up with vintage gloriousness, as well as my walls.

Walking Historic Neighborhoods
I had the extreme joy of walking Georgetown's historic district with adorable homes and quaint Texas yards while catching up with a dear friend. We even visited the library, grabbing a refreshing beverage on the way, and stopped on the historic square to browse the Saturday Market. Cheap, easy, filled with fresh air.

Friar Tuck's Pantry
A spot of tea and a fresh scone with free WiFi AND a kid's play area (though it's better for quieter, well behaved children -which don't live at my house.) This sweet spot is located in Round Rock's historic area on Main Street/FM 620 and is an absolute gem. Delicious food (including lunch) and an excellent selection of teas and coffee. Prices are very reasonable and you'll love the atmosphere.

AT HOME

Iced Green Tea
Put the kettle on, pour boiling water into a pitcher along with 3-4 tea bags, steep and enjoy on ice. Pop a spring of fresh mint in your glass or a slice of orange for extra fun!

10 Min. Sun Therapy
After a morning of working in my home office, I join the kids in the backyard and soak up some rays during my lunch break. 10 minutes is just enough time before the sweltering Texas sun gets to be too intense. No matter where you live, a 10 minute break in the great outdoors does wonders to clear your mind and lift your spirits. Through is a few stretches and, holy moly, you're good as new!

Storytime
Waverley, my 1 1/2 year old, is bringing me a handful of board books as I write this :) Spending a few minutes a day reading with the kids helps me connect as well as have enriching time with my Wild Things. Even though their ages and attention spans are significantly different, it's invaluable time together.

Eating at the Table
Lunch and dinner breaks should be just that. Breaks. Sitting down at the kitchen table instead of in front of the computer makes food so much more fulfilling and enjoyable, plus that time to simply think is utterly refreshing.

Clean Feet
Okay, I'm weird. This I know quite well. BUT, right before I go to bed (especially if I've spend the day barefoot and wearing sandals) I find a foot bath unspeakably pampering and soothing. I don't do anything special -just sit on the side of the tub, rinse/soak my feet, wash with some soap and skip into bed. Foot lotion is also divine and can be applied right before slipping into those crisp, welcoming sheets. That's it. I'm going to bed -it all sounds so tempting, even at noon!

Fun in the Sun

Central Texas Family Fun, Unplanned & Cheap

I want to go on vacation. Financially, we need to have a staycation.
Okay: I want to plan a staycation. Brian just wants me to finally start taking days off. You know, like a normal person. Wednesday evening and Thursday morning/afternoon I finally did and we had so much fun, on the cheap.

Blue Hole park in Georgetown is awesome. You can jump from limestone cliffs into the deep river water, swim surrounded by beautiful tree coverage while enjoying a gorgeous sunset, or slip down a natural little water slide. The rocks are rather slippery, so wear swim shoes with traction. This area is best for capable swimmers.

McDonald's in Taylor, TX Yesterday we drove east on 29 through the countryside, and south on 95 into Taylor where we stopped at McDonald's and the kids had a ball playing with other tykes. The playscape is outdoors, mainly covered in shade. Obviously, this is an ideal situation when the weather is cooperative and yesterday it certainly was.

One of the great things about living where we do is being surrounded by farms and ranches. Though I miss Alaska's grand mountains, after almost four years I still melt at the beauty of the rolling fields. Plus, one thing Central Texas has that Alaska doesn't: an abundance of wildflowers 8 months out of the year. I love seeing Spring arrive with the Bluebonnets and Indian Paintbrush, then Summer with the gorgeous sunflowers that take over. There's always something in bloom.

Ikea in Round Rock, TX We toured the store, survived a series of tantrums, found several treasures and enjoyed lunch together (especially that scrumptious chocolate-mousse-cake!) Repeating that trip for my birthday next month. Once you get used to the size and layout (and endless options) of Ikea, it's really a fun place to visit. Those Scandinavians are brilliant.

There are so many other fun things I want to do. The Mayborn Planetarium and Space Theater in Killeen, Inner Space Caverns just down the road in Georgetown, Round Rock Express baseball games, to name a few.

Balancing work and family time when you work from home is always a challenge, but we'll get there. Or at least closer. Now, I feel a bit more refreshed, recharged and reconnected. Thank goodness for smart suggestions (high five, Brian.)

Mister Sassypants

He's always been a strong-willed child, but, Heavens to Betsy, this is getting ridiculous.

Fact is, our little dude is not the boss and needs to know it -in love, but with greater strength and consistency than we've been dishing out.

No longer, oh tiny tyrant, shall you eat nothing but chips, crackers and cookies. No longer shall you drink gallons of chocolate milk and nothing else. We've been winning the tooth-brushing battle lately (hooray for big victories) and now it's time to conquer the food issue. And the constant "NO!" issue. And the screaming fits issue.

I read a genius tip in a book my mom gave me on how to brush an obstinate toddler's teeth and it's been working pretty dang well. The author suggested taking whatever you child is lately obsessed with (for Wilder it's dragons, lions, and Thomas the Tank Engine,) imagining they are in his mouth and telling him you're going to tickle them out. Instead of Wilder screaming bloody murder, he tells you who's in his mouth and happily opens wide, pointing out where they're at. This works many nights -not flawlessly, but 1000% better than before. If you know of a small toothbrush fighter, this trick just might work.

When it comes to food, I'd given up making Wilder anything normal since he won't eat it. Chicken nuggets, any combination of sandwiches -fo'gedaboudit, as my uncle Vinny would say. Okay, so I don't have an uncle Vinny. But I DO have a formerly good eater who now eats worse than a male college student, minus the beer.

My plan of attack is... well, excuse me one minute. I am currently in a battle over cookies and I need to win. I'll be experimenting with various veggies he's taken interest in and hopefully will make headway. Wouldn't it be amazing if he at *gasp* meat?!

Imagining the possibilities and dreaming big...

Wedding Season

It's wedding season and it's been going on for me since April. Thankfully I have one more wedding next week until things start to slow down a bit, but I had no idea when I booked this many spring weddings that I would be this busy. Thankfully work has been pouring in -shoots of all kinds, acting opportunities, client meetings, etc.- but I've been struggling keeping me sanity (and consciousness.) Funny enough, I recall slow days in February and March enjoying crafting up a storm and having tons of family time. Lately I wish, I wish, I wish I could clone myself.

I love the work I get to do. When I'm on a shoot or tucked away in my new office editing, I enjoy it so much. Often I even feel guilty, that work shouldn't be so much fun because being productive and "working" is supposed to be drudgery, right? Obviously, the answer is no, that you ought to love what you do and do what you love, but it still feels a little wrong enjoying myself so much while getting paid.

This week I had the joy of being hired to the University of Texas's Student Unions dept. for a grand portrait shoot around their buildings. One of the gals, (name dropping here: who's mentor was Rosa Parks and who's father was personal friends with MLK, Jr.) hired me to shoot her extended family yesterday morning as her father had just entered hospice care and all of his family was gathering to be with him. I was so blessed by being with them for that short hour yesterday. A family full of love and brimming with joy despite the circumstances.

Shoots galore, I tell you, shoots galore.

Today, besides uploading all the photos from last night's wedding we worked, I'm finally taking a day off. We're starting out with a restaurant-style breakfast and then Brian will prep for tomorrow's triathlon he's been tirelessly training for. Taking a break and needing it, like, big time.

Portrait of a Very Grand Mother

With a few hours before her plane departure, we snuck in an impromptu photoshoot in the studio. Wilder had the remote for these shots -as well as his wiener. We're potty training, so it's a new -ahem- sensation walking around with things so accessible. (Shaking my head in dismay, shrug shoulders and "that's life!")

My jazzy, razzmatazz Mama! Where all my talent comes from -except for my lack of organizational skills. Thaaaaat didn't get passed on. I cringe at the very word: organize. *Shiver*
My mother, on the other hand, is a genius of streamlining, efficiency and functionalization (it's a word, Spellcheck. My mom invented it. So there.) She could teach every military branch and Fortune 500 company a thing or two.

My mother is also the Queen of Projects. I wish, I wish, I wish I had this skill, but ever since I was little (and to this very day) the kinds of big projects my mother could easily conquer froze me in my tracks. Her mole hills were certainly my Everests. The most poignant (and now rather ironic) example is THE PHOTO PROJECT. All capital letters quite necessary. YOU didn't have to do it; I did.

And the story goes....
When I was in high school mom put me in charge of organizing all of the photos the family had ever accumulated. Pre-my-existance to the present. That spanned at least 30 years (I might be exaggerating, but only my mother knows. Comment surely to follow.) I had to create a system for organizing negatives and distributing photos, labeled by year, month and event, for all 12 members of our family. Fortunately mom and dad shared a photo box, but other than that, I had to figure out the rest.
I cried and cried and wasted so many hours feeling overwhelmed and whining. But, BUT... thanks to my mother and her, "I know you can do it. If you'd stop talking about it and just get going, you'll be done faster," I eventually finished.

And I'm never doing it again, thankyouverymuch.

To her, it was an easily accomplished task that just took a little extra time. Just like her bi-yearly Clothing Project where she and my older sister went through all 8 younger kids clothing and freshened up sizes and made things weather appropriate. Tubs and tubs of stored clothing all marked, such as "Boys 6-8," "Girls Winter Clothes 12-14." Circulate, organize, put away, repeat. Holy moly, these women are unstoppable.

Aaaaand I'm tired just thinking about it! Phew. I'll be back after a quick nap.

I love you, Mama, so very much and I'm so proud to be your daughter. Thank you for always believing, always praying and always loving. And for never making me do the photo project ever again.

My mother arrived on our doorstep last Monday all the way from Washington as a mother's day present to both herself and to me!

The kids have SO been enjoying playing with her and all the extra love and sweet hugs, and it's been a greater blessing than I can express hearing them all together, laughing and being together. We don't get to see my mom that often -this was a very special treat!

These pictures were actually from the night she arrived, last monday, but it's been so busy here that I haven't had a chance to snap any new ones and mom heads back home this afternoon.
Mom was able to join Brian and I as we saw the screening of a UT graduate film I was in this fall; the first time I have ever seen myself on a big screen. Having Mom here for that was super-extra-special.

I am so glad Mom was able to come. We squeezed in a trip to Costco, playtime around the house, Mom and Wilder had a looooooong date at Burger King (totally fabulous), some yummy Texas BBQ, and some movie time.

We love you, Grandmama! Can't wait to see you again!

Sunshine and Succulents: DIY Window Sill Cactus Garden

Good Morning! It's a sunshine-themed day already. I love that my morning has been blessed by yellow and I just had to share some snaps of the AM glory and warmth, as well as my recent crafty/creation: succulent window sill gardens! So hot right now.

Above, Wilder's golden waffles. Thank you, frozen foods, for making my morning just that much easier.

Basking in dreams of a summer road trip. Guess where we'd like to go...

One of the easiest (do I ever do anything else? no) projects I've done. And it's fun -gettin' dirty for a good reason. Gardening is so, um, earthy -for lack of a better word- and I love how connected I feel with creation when I'm tooling about amongst roots and top soil. Ahem, not that it's been something I've done lately (still dreaming of the garden I've yet to build, but annually think about as spring rolls around.)

Yesterday my friend Aubrey and I were getting some gardening supplies at Home Depot to keep the wee rabbits out of her garden. We spied the miniature succulents and I was immediately struck by "Idea-ism": must make a window sill succulent garden!

Lately I've been seeing these beauties on so many blogs and websites.

And now for the DIY bit:

Ingredients~

Glass jar, vase, container, large mason jar, candle holder, etc.
Small rocks for decorative drainage for roots
Sand (optional, but useful as well a pretty)
Potting soil
Assortment of succulents/cacti
Small figurines (optional and slightly hilarious and/or charming)

Takin' Steps~

Layer rocks and/or sand in your container
Add top soil
Arrange your succulents and gently pack them in the dirt
Arrange your charming/ridiculous figurines (mine to be added when I find 'em)
Place in a high light area and smile often!

These two mini gardens cost about $28 total. The thin, oval vase was the gouger at $15, but I found it at Garden Ridge and it was the perfect fit for my skinny window sill by the kitchen sink. Brian keeps expecting to see a fish in there.

It makes me happy.

Boy howdy, I simply love seeing these colors! And the plants are so plump and adorable.

Hopefully I won't kill them within a month.

The (un)Glamorous Side of Acting

(Disclaimer: I happened to have some recent shots from our fabulous feature film, Out of the Darkness. The following is not about this production, but about the industry in general. I LOVE working on this film and am so thankful for the opportunity to work with the marvelous Danny Carrales. What a gift!)

Waiting; that's what it all boils down to. And that as an actor you are on the bottom-most rung when it comes to producing a film/commercial/etc. You're a trained monkey -the one who the show is seemingly all about, but when it really comes down to it, you're just there to perform on command. I'm beginning to warm to the idea of being in production instead...

I love acting; it's great! The challenges, the novelty of being in front of the camera, being "the talent," it's fun and I'm not dogging any one experience (particularly the current film I'm working on. It has been a JOY being a part of it.) But there are things that most folks don't know that are everyday parts of being an actor. Things that I'd have liked to know in high school when the dream began. And things that make living this flexible lifestyle hard on anybody, particularly a family and your "other" job.
I'll expound.

Lately Austin has been inundated with commercial work. Yay! I get an email from my agent. Double check if I'm available for the audition date, potential callback and the potential shoot dates (which they usually have 3 of, though you'll only be used for one.) You have to have an open schedule for all of those dates in order to accept the audition. I move my schedule around, make sure babysitting is taken care of, then say I'm available.

An audition usually takes up half my day. For less than five minutes in front of the casting director. The drive time, allowance for bad traffic, getting ready (hair, wardrobe, directions, printing scripts, memorizing,) babysitting. It's kind of an ordeal. Arrive at the audition, wait sometimes up to an hour if they're running behind, do my thing for a few minutes, then head back home.

If you get a callback, it may be the night before that you hear, "Congratulations, you're callback is at 9:20am..."which means -CRAP!- I need a babysitter! Who can I call at 10:30pm to watch the kids at 8am so I have ample drive time? You get it figured out, go to your callback, then wait.
You won't hear if you didn't get the job, but you still have to have those dates available just in case the producers/client changed their minds last minute. So don't make any plans. But, statistically speaking, you didn't get the job.

The good thing? When you do book a job, you normally get paid more for 4 hours of work than you would for 2 weeks/1 month at a normal job. It's kind of like gambling. You never know if you're going to win, even if you feel lucky or you rocked your audition.

Acting is tough on the ol' ego, as well as your schedule. Constantly putting yourself out there, doing your best, occasionally booking a job but mostly simply not hearing anything while you keep your life on hold, just in case. And if you do seize other opportunities when you should be holding your schedule, your agent won't see you as reliable and will cease submitting you regularly for projects.

Am I griping? I don't mean to. Well, maybe I do... On top of all of this juggling, when you do book a job, you may not see your paycheck for months. I finally got paid for a voice over I did in June 2010. Last week. Still waiting on payment for a project I did the last week of December. I'm seriously considering starting an actor's-collections-slash-bounty-hunter agency. Gas, wardrobe, babysitting -all of that requires finances directly out of my pocket. The truth is that actors are pawns in the chess game of production. Not a complaint, just a fact. If I want to change that I should get into producing my own work -and I like that idea. But I do wish a few simple changes would be made to how the current system operates.

1) Casting Directors should post when a project has been cast in order to release all of the potential bookers.

2) Agencies need to get paid within 1 month of the project shooting so the actor can receive compensation in a timely manner.

What a relief it would be if those two things were ironed out!

So you want to be an actor? To make it as easy on yourself as possible so you can fully pursue a career in the limelight: live with your parents, marry someone with a well-paying job so you aren't required to bring in any regular income, be a trust-fund baby, have your life revolve around acting (not a bad thing), and don't have kids. See, it's simple!

It's a fun, fun job but it comes with quite a few challenges and sacrifices that not too many folks are aware of. I truly am thankful for the chance to pursue what is available in the Austin/Central Texas market, thanks to having Brian home 5 days a week for the kids and being self-employed.

Easter Friends

These boots were made for walking. Actually, these thrift-store finds (formerly recognizable as Thomas the Train boots) have transformed to slippers that Wilder insists on wearing on the wrong feet, tearing off sections of rubber and lovingly toting around most anywhere. They're disgusting, but he loves them. And they were part of his Easter outfit.

We opened packages from both sets of grandparents and the kids had a lovely time sugaring up. Wilder concealing a mouth full of jelly beans.

As I prepped for a late Easter lunch with friends, Waverley kicked off the celebration with a party tray of fruit.

The celebrities arrived! Jason Gerhart (leading man of "Out of the Darkness" we're currently filming) and his wonderful family from Los Angeles joined us for a day of fun!

We popped in a movie after our meal and the kids settled down for a bit before we commenced the egg hunt.

Chalae and I --I mean, the EASTER BUNNY-- hid the eggs in the back yard while the daddies held the kids down inside, then we released the hounds.

As an experienced egg hunter, Madison had the concept down.

Balin (I know I spelled that wrong -sorry, Chalae!) was fascinated by taking Waverley's binki in and out of her mouth. Such a funny pair; only a few months apart.

The peak of the entertainment was blowing up the balloons, then letting the air out, watching them zip around the yard. I tried to fill the eggs with a fair amount of toys so it wasn't total sugar mania. Still, Brian ended up tossing our collection of candy the next day when a handful of toddlers got into a bag and started bouncing off the walls. Literally.

We are so thankful for the time we've gotten to spend with this great family. It's been inspiring and exciting hearing about their journey from the midwest to the west coast and what's happening in Tinseltown. Looking forward to a few more days on set with such a great actor and hopefully another get together with their family before they head back to California.

Making a Movie: Behind the Scenes of "Out of the Darkness"

Um...whatever his job title is (he imports all the footage, tags it, processes it, creates the dailies, and does all sorts of important things. Like impersonating an European artist.)

Make Up Artists (featuring Chloe Clark, who plays my daughter in the film)...

Check out the goods. Our faces truly are canvasses in the hands of these artists. Love all those brushes.

Chloe and her (real) dad, Scott. Chloe is a remarkable actress. She is nearly 16, but plays a pre-teen in the movie. She cries on cue, has an amazing work ethic, is perfectly sweet and lovely and I want to keep her. Alas, so does Scott and I think he wins. Notice the creepy hand on the bed? We were filming that day at a student hospital and the floor we were on had training dummies occupying every bed. I am pretty sure several people wet their pants in surprise (I might have been one of them, but I'm not verifying that.)

Waiting to start rolling. Art dept, wardrobe and actors. Jennifer rocks the doctor role. I'd have her as my GP any day. "Trust me, I play a doctor on TV."

I have always been fascinated by casting. These extras look exactly like nurses, don't they? While on set for "Boston Legal" a few years ago, I was stunned and amazed how perfect for the various roles the extras looked. You don't notice it really when you're watching a film or tv show, but when all those folks are gathered in a holding tent, in wardrobe and waiting around, it hits you, "Wow! That guy DOES look like a lawyer. She DOES look like a NYC business woman. He looks JUST like a news anchor!" Pretty neat.

When you watch a show, you rarely ever think about the number of people crowded into a room that are off camera. In this shot, you'll probably only see two people, but there are 12 busily working behind.

And another half dozen in a traveling office set-up, coordinating the next days, making sure we're all fed, and negotiating with people and locations.

Ah, the peaceful hospital room of a woman in a coma. Filled with crew. And fun buttons.

Margaret Williamson plays Jonah's mother. She miraculously wakes from a coma to be with her daughter-in-law (me) and granddaughter (Chloe) while Jonah is in the middle of great physical and spiritual danger. The Mother is the pillar of faith that helps Jonah's family through this difficult time.

It's been wonderful getting to work with so many great people. This is the largest role I've had in a feature film and it's totally cool getting to see what goes on behind the scenes on a big production. Though this is a low-budget movie, it still takes a ton of money and man power to make happen. Having gotten to know Danny and his wife, Aubrey (the inspiration for my character,) over the past months, it's beautiful witnessing his vision become a reality in this film. I am honored and so blessed to be a part of this project. And, to quote the film, "Now, let's see what God will do."

All Aboard The Zilker Zephyr: Family Fun in Austin, TX

I had an audition at noon in Austin and we decided to make a day of it. I packed a munchy-style lunch for the family and Brian loaded up the kiddos, knocked out my audition (for print work) and headed out to ride the train. The miniature locomotive, the Zilker Zephyr, in Zilker Park next to Barton Springs.

You see, we have a train enthusiast in the family. Thomas the Tank Engine, PBS show "Dinosaur Train," the circus train in "Dumbo," and of course "Polar Express." Wilder was purdy darn excited.

For under $10 we were all able to make the 25 minute journey together. All Aboard!
Honestly, it felt like we were celebrating a birthday. The sun, the fun, the family -pure goodness! We will definitely take this outing again. And the area is a WEALTH of family activity. Barton Springs where you can splash in the chilly water, dog parks galore, an enormous playground next to the "train station," concession stand, outdoor theater (often) featuring Shakespearian plays, etc.

The kids loved the large playscape. Shoes would have been a good idea, though. A wee bit hot on the tootsies, but it encouraged them to say goodbye to the park and get out of the sun. Besides, we can't keep shoes on these little people, anyway.

Lucas and Sofia. They're our buds. Their mama, Erin, and I have a sanity-saving arrangement of watching each other's children for a few hours once a week. Thank the sweet Lord Erin lives near by and we're both as flexible as noodles when it comes to schedules. Mostly Erin. She could be in Schedule Flexibility Olympics and win gold. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Erin.

While we watched the kids this Sunday so Erin and Jose could have a little afternoon date I was able to snag a few shots of the wildlife. Mostly covered in peanut butter.

Living My Dream

I remember standing in the kitchen with my Dad discussing my future. I wanted to be an actor/filmmaker and was debating what route to go after graduating high school. During that time in my life what I wanted most was to be a part of Christian films. Life rarely happens the way you plan, and after all these years I never expected that my first major role in a feature film would be in a Christian movie. I'd given up on that dream long ago.

It hit me yesterday that, finally, I was truly living my dream. Wardrobe fittings and a screen test for make up and hair, running 6 miles with the family, editing a large batch of wedding photos, my highlighted script open next to my home work station -family, creativity, entrepreneurship, acting: I hadn't abandoned my dreams; they were coming to fruition.

Life is marked by seasons, chapters, moments. I continue understanding new levels of this reality as I stare down can'ts and see beyond my impossibles. This moment in time I am embracing the beautiful chord strum by so many hopes and dreams coming into play at once. I don't know if I'll have an opportunity like this again, but seeing that it's possible is a source of extreme happiness. I wish I could stand in my kitchen with my Dad and tell him all the exciting things going on and see that proud smile on his face. We'd talk about possibilities, the future, new endeavors and continue dreaming. Though Dad is gone, I can't express how thankful I am to have Brian -my fellow planner, hoper, dreamer, idea generator. And my best friend.

I'm packing up to shoot a wedding in San Antonio today and am looking forward to the two hour drive. Time to dream.

A Map of Inspiration

A few movies and key moments have stuck in my mind lately as milestones of inspiration. As I started tugging at strands of memory, more things shook out as key influences in molding my interest and style from childhood to present and I've been rather surprised (and delighted) at seeing a map of inspiration materialize as I piece together some of the important influences on my (young and older) self.

Laura Ingalls Wilder and Kirsten made me want to live in the wilderness and inspired many evenings of "pretend we don't have electricity. Except for the oven. And the TV." My mother's homemade bread and comforting stews fed this country dream of mine as she spent a few years between leaving full-time work and before we began adopting. The desire to live in seclusion from urbania, suburbia and modernity still maintains burning embers inside me, as long as I've got internet, though -right?

My adoration for the elegance of the Victorian age, the lace, china, romantic gowns and jewelry probably started with a wee bit of envy over my sister Crystal's Samantha doll. Sharing our American Girl books, then devouring the BBC books on tape Dad brought home from trips from England of A Little Princess, The Wind in the Willows and Peter Pan placed me firmly in a sweetly frivolous dreamworld ladened with cups of tea and doilies, from which I will never emerge. Quite happily.

As an artistic soul, and already predisposed to the Victorian era, I fully (ridiculously) embraced the story and example of Beatrix Potter. Hours were spent sketching, writing, designing and -of course- day dreaming. The dramatics of a 10 year old know NO bounds. I can only imagine what I have in store when Waverley becomes pre-pubescent. Lord Almighty...

I still remember the first time I found and purchased Victoria Magazine. At age 11, standing in line at the grocery store a few months from leaving with my touring choir to compete in England, I saw a Victoria issue featuring beautiful cottages in the British Isles. It was love at first sight and I have been irrevocably influenced by its enchanting pages. I still swoon when I open an issue.

Harriet the Spy, though seeing it when I was a sophomore or junior in high school, was such a jolt of inspiration that I immediately rearranged and redesigned my bedroom. I stayed up past midnight and had a shopping list of decor items ready to go for the next day. THAT was inspiration. Color, style, avant-garde, attitude and sheer creativity. When something grabs you like that, you'll never forget it.

When I was in high school and early college, Meg Ryan got me. You've Got Mail and French Kiss influenced my dress, my hair and my overall outlook. The conservative gal finding confidence and freedom in exploring new sides of herself. "Look at you? You would declare a pack of chewing gum!"

I cut my bangs after watching A Series of Unfortunate Events. My style was also highly influenced by this Victorian/Vintage/Goth inspired film. I went from conservative Lands End/JC Penney-type to slight rocker/retro-vintage/elegant-inspired. Okay, okay, it's not really a style, BUT it opened up a different side of me and I found a new surge of inspiration! That's the point.

As my nesting instincts started kicking in a few months before having Wilder, Bend-The-Rules Sewing and other crafters like Amy Karol encouraged my fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants creation. Say goodbye to structure and hello to productive, short projects! That's MY kind of craftin'! In this phase, I realized I can wear all sorts of hats in life. I didn't have to grow up and be one thing; life holds a series of titles and chapters. I can be an author, mother, dancer, singer, sewer, wife, photographer, actress, baker, entrepreneur, jewelry designer, corporate woman, gardener, etc. Life is full of opportunities and seasons. Being content with the season I'm currently in and looking forward to the next (as inspiration hits) is part of this grand adventure that makes me so happy.

In the last few years as I've discovered the incredibly diverse world of female bloggers, MUCH inspiration has been derived from folks such as Ree Drummond and Ashley of Under the Sycamore. These are women who encompass much of what I aspire to be: mother, creator, writer and photographer and entrepreneur.

Sifting through the images that float to the top of memory as I reflect on inspirational turning points, it has helped develop clarity in who I am. It also encourages me to continue seeking out new areas of inspiration and go boldly where I've yet to travel in my creativity. Firmly planted in 30, I'm allowing my style to swish around, embracing a little of this, a little of that and not being scared that I'm turning into someone I'm not. I am a collector of styles, clothing, projects and ideas. And I'm happy acknowledging that.

Running For My Life

I've said it before: I didn't grow up athletic. In my early adulthood I took my physical fitness by the horns and attempted to get in shape and live a (relatively) active lifestyle. Aerobic kickboxing, gym membership, step classes -I felt like I was pushing myself to new heights. When I worked up to running my first two miles on the treadmill, it was major cause for celebration. I developed my fitness routine(s) and stuck to my limits -20 push ups (modified, at that) a set amount of crunches, maxing at 2 miles, etc.

It wasn't until I met Brian that I realized I could go further, faster. He's been avidly into fitness/body building for nearly two decades. Yeah, he's been doing this awhile. Brian has taught me over the past six years that I can plow through my mental blocks that keep me working out "like a girl" so I can achieve greater physical fitness. Which brings us to the present. The biggest, scariest goal I've ever set for myself: running a 1/2 marathon.

EEK!

Okay, I'm good. I'm good. Just recovering from the enormity of the challenge. See? Mental blocks...

Brian has run 5 full marathons; I've run one 5 mile race that I was just thankful to finish alive, so while this training is a cake walk for The Hubs, it's a MAJOR challenge for this mama. Last week we started our training with the goal of a 4 mile run. Brian pushes the double stroller and I pad along side. We ran two 4 1/2 mile days and two shorter runs, so this week we're on to 6 miles for the long run. Yesterday (-deep breath-) I conquered the never-been-done-before. For me.

I ran 6 miles. 6. Whole. Miles. And we were sprinting at the end. I'm still amazed and allowing myself to feel the glorious accomplishment of it. Though it's not quite half of the total I'll be running in just a few weeks, six miles is something I never thought I'd be running without months of gradual training. Thanks to Brian's experience, athleticism, (and for ticking me off at the last half mile,) we sprinted to a finish I was certain I would be hobbling toward. Another feat -we finished just under 60 minutes. I didn't know I could do 10 minute miles for that length.

Busting through the impossible, thanks to my incredible fitness coach -and making it a family affair.
We'll see how the journey goes as we conquer the next several weeks. For now, I am rapturously happy leaving 6 miles is the dust.

Photography Tips: Choosing Locations for Portraits

No matter what your job is, it's easy to fall into a pattern -find safe bets and stick with them. You figure out what works and you stay with it; if it's not broke, don't fix it, right? I'm reminded of something a wise friend once told me, "I always try to get to a location by a slightly different route. It expands your brain." Basically, she was saying, "Think outside the box. Always." The lesson most definitely applies to the creative arts, particularly if you want to be competitive.

A fellow photographer emailed me last week for location suggestions for engagement portraits. That made me think about the first few months after I started my business, how I learned about my favorite (semi-secret) spots and what it takes to make a great location for portraits. As I've been at the business for a bit now, I've learned that it's necessary for me to constantly be looking for new ways and locations to shoot. I have a few beloved haunts, but if I just bring clients to those same spots, recreating poses with the same backgrounds with different people, my pictures are going to look repetitive. I have to keep thinking outside the box in order to please clients and keep myself from stagnating as an artist.

Tips for Selecting Portrait Locations:

1) Variety. Choose a location that has several different kinds of backdrops within easy walking distance. The best places I've found have different textures and colors within five minutes walk of each other.

2) Lighting. If you're shooting with natural light, find a place that has ample shade to use indirect sunlight. Eaves, overhangs, tall buildings can all cast great shadowed areas while still allowing enough light to capture your subjects well.

3) Time of day. Shoot either in the morning or mid/late afternoon for the best indirect sunlight. Or, pray for cloud cover. Cloudy days create some of the best even lighting conditions! Trees can be pesky to shoot around when you've got that lovely sunshine out. Your subjects are usually speckled with light and shadow; it just don't look good, folks. But cloud coverage changes all that. Oh, lovely clouds...

Don't underestimate the power of your editing software. If you're not able to get that perfect glow straight out of the camera, there are easy ways to illuminate your subject(s.) It's always easiest to capture it correctly, but thank goodness for photoshop, yeah?

I shot this in the early afternoon with rather heavy sunlight. Though the other side of the building had great doors with fabulous color and texture, the sun was blazing and created harsh shadows on Sarah. Thankfully I had chosen a golden location that had lots of backdrops to choose from, regardless of what angle the sun was at. Here we shot the back of the building with an equally interesting wall.

Keep your eyes open, find new spots, look for the unexpected and keep thinking outside the box!

Making the "Kelly Cameron Photography" Promo Video

Two amazing videographers, James Burniston and Karey Cannon, shot all day to create the Kelly Cameron Photography promo video that will be posted, well, everywhere I can possibly put it.
These gents are gifted, SERIOUSLY gifted, and I was smiling bigger inside and out than if I had won one million dollars. The raw footage alone was as gorgeous as a feature film. UGH! Too much, too much wonderfulness!

These shots are just a few from a snippet of the day's adventures. We started out on South Congress street in Austin. James and Karey shadowed me as I shot engagement portraits for a fabulous couple getting married this Fall. Afterward we hustled back up to Georgetown and the men set up in the studio to shoot some wonderfully fun and touching testimonials. I mean, if both of the brides that I interviewed cry because the way your work has touched their lives, I think I'm doing a decent job. I aim for happy tears.

Between testimonials, we jaunted out into a field near our home to catch some footage of our family. Karey chased Wilder with his camera. Waverley was a total ham. Brian caught us all in a Mexican standoff with our cameras. We were all armed and shooting. It was glorious.

Who's a happy elf? Who's a happy little elf? That's right, YOU are.

Why, hello there.

Hours later and I'm still smiling.

The men. Armed and, well Wilder is the only one dangerous. He's got a rock.

The final product should be coming in about a month. 'Til then, happy dance, happy dance! This video is going to be phenomenal!

Feature Film Booked!

Well, big news here, big news!

Finally, after auditions and callbacks since September, the Christian feature film "Out of the Darkness" has been cast! Written and directed by filmmaker Danny Carrales, recent recipient of a Lifetime Achievement award by the National Broadcasters Association for his contribution to Christian filmmaking, "Out of the Darkness" is a faith-based political thriller that will rock your socks off!

Yours truly gets to play a supporting lead as the main character's wife! From an actor's perspective, the script is fabulous as it showcases so much talent. Quite an ensemble cast.

Filming starts April 10th through May 30th. I'll keep you posted and share some behind-the-scenes photos from days on set!

I am so grateful for this opportunity to work on such a powerful film, with Danny and a stellar cast, and highly anticipate the spiritual journey filming this will take me through. Please pray for the production and folks involved. This is going to be a strong instrument for God's work! Yay, God!

Fresh flowers are something I (unfortunately) do not grow, but -heck- I've got bushes! While pruning a bit o' the landscapery, I've got a healthy bundle of green to decorate my kitchen using a recycled glass jar. Now, that's what I call "going green."

Hmmm....rosemary and just a wee bit of time.
Oh, ho, ho - another bad joke bites the dust.

Vines and vintage. Trimming up the overgrown Butterfly vine in the front yard, I braided and wove the long strands together to make a wreath. My Indian name is "Runs With Scissors."
I picked up a few elegant vintage luggage pieces yesterday at a local antique shop for a total steal. The brown one pictured is a new purchase, the cream Samsonite was my grandmother's that she took to nursing school. Very special.

ShaZZAM! Two more fabulous finds (under $25 each) at the antique store. I am still in awe of the stellar shape of the interiors of the luggage.

The $1 vintage shirt from the thrift store. (I was a busy bee yesterday. A gloriously happy, busy bee.)

And, of course, Thomas the Tank Engine. Boots for a couple bucks at the thrift store.
Wilder insists on wearing them on the wrong feet. Every. Day. At least he's wearing shoes now!

Creamy Faux Crisp a la Strawberries
(makes one delicious serving)

Frozen Strawberries (4-5) microwaved until thawed
2 heaping tablespoons low fat or fat free cottage cheese
3 heaping tablespoons low fat vanilla yogurt
1/3 to 1/2 cup Kashi's GoLean cereal (GoLean Crunch is yummy, too, if you have strong teeth...)
2 big dollops of fat free cool whip

UGH! So stinkin' delicious. I have this for breakfast, dessert, etc. Protein packed, low fat, sweet and scrumptious!

The Scent of a Woman: Choosing Your Fragrance, The Smart Way

This nose was made for sniffing, and that's just what it'll do. One of these days this nose is gonna... well, it won't sniff all over you. I save that for my kids.

Recently I broke the top off my "signature" bottle of scent, so it was time to hit up the store to sniff out the competition. I could purchase a fresh bottle of the fragrance I had, but I believe that just as we evolve over time, our scent should. Time for something new and fresh!

After wearing my olfactory out and narrowing my selection down to two top choices (believe me, no easy feat. I was at Sephora for a good hour. Make that an hour and a half. Just sniffing) I felt overwhelmed at selecting just one. The budget wasn't large enough for two bottles, so a decision had to be made. Aha! -or so I thought, until I happened upon a small station brimming with purse-sized roller-ball fragrances! They just so happened to have two fragrances in each stick, priced at about $20 each. Four scents for the price of one!

True, these are much smaller volumes than one large bottle, but your paying for choices. Now I have several months to decide which fragrance I want to invest in, plus I have so much variety -which, as any girl knows, truly is the spice of life.

Tips on Selecting Your Fragrance:

Smell Your Age. White Shoulders might make you feel warm and cozy, reminding you of Grandma, but please don't smell like an old woman when you're not. Also, don't grab the cheap body sprays that are meant for adolescents when you wore the original 80's clothing you see trending now. Age appropriate scent is the way to go.
You'll Know "The One" When You Smell It. Know thyself. Embrace the scent that resounds with your being. Now, this may be way over the top for some less whimsical romantics, but, like music, scent feeds my soul. Food may win men's hearts, but scents win mine. Take your time, sniff around, don't pressure yourself to leave with a bottle. Spray as many paper strips as you want, walk around, go shop elsewhere, and return (be it that day or next week) to make your final decision.
Where It Awhile. Walk around wearing the fragrance. And don't spray on your skin until you've narrowed it down to just two or three choices. Choose neck/upper shirt and each arm for different scents, then let it settle on your skin and see how you feel about each scent after it's had time to mature and mix with your natural oils.
Variety. If, like myself, you can't decide on one -or you just like to have several to choose from- grab some samples or travel size bottles. The last thing you want is a counter full of partially used bottles that sit there for years collecting dust and turning rancid.
Buy Online. Found your new favorite? Well, check out ebay and google shopping options because you can almost always get a better deal buying online.

Allowing Yourself

A very dear friend of mine shared that she had just learned to allow herself to grieve, or perhaps feel would be a better term. There were several traumatic events that she had plowed through with a stiff upper lip, chin poised upward, doggy paddling through the flood of emotions in order to cope and cross to the other side. Never had she allowed herself to look at the situation, acknowledge and release her feelings, and then move forward. It was always about moving on.

My philosophy: When crap happens, you deal with it. In my case, dealing with it meant you stuffed it below the surface and got on with life. The proverbial baggage of unresolved issues and emotions build up until you collapse under the weight of them, often coping in not so very healthy ways.

It's okay to feel sad, mad, disappointed, frustrated, hurt, deflated, dashed, shattered, empty, etc. It's also okay to rejoice, celebrate, do victory dances, laugh 'til your sore, and share contagious smiles. When we deprive ourselves of these emotional recognitions and releases before we "move on" we're robbing ourselves of life, as well as piling on unresolved issues. Societies and religions marks special days for celebration and remembrance. It's important stuff, people! We're meant to acknowledge and release emotion, just as much as we're meant to keep progressing.

I don't want to suck it up, ignore the pain, settle down and stop being so happy, and so on. I'm going to allow myself to acknowledge and release, then move forward. There's a flip side, though, that I'm not advocating in my life: getting stuck in emotions. We are not victims of life, we are victors. I will not let my feelings run my life or hold me hostage, keeping me from growth. As Brian says, "You learn, you move on." But as I am now injecting to that philosophy, "You learn, you deal, you move on."

Today I am going to grab a few minutes, acknowledge my situation, feel, release, then onward-ho in a positive and constructive direction.

This life stuff is full of learning material, ain't it?

Upcycled T-shirts: Head Banging Headbands

So, what do you do with the scraps from your upcycled retro-thrift-store t-shirts? Make headbands, for one thing!

Tada! New redone shirt and hair accessory, to boot!

Here's whatcha do.

Take a longish length of your t-shirt snippings, create a loop that comfortable fits over your head as a headband, and tie in a double knot.
If you don't have a longish length, take two smaller ones and sew them together (as I did with this one) and follow the knot instruction above.
Using smaller scraps, tie to knot to create a pom-pom (or starfish, as I like to call mine.)
Slip it on and high five everyone you meet that day.

Friend #1: "Wherever did you get the charming hair accessory?"

You: "I made it! Amazing what you can do with t-shirt scraps, isn't it?"

Friend #1: "Oh yes, quite amazing. I think I'll make one, too!"

You: "Now your thinkin'!"

Thrift, upcycle, have fun!

Thrift Store Style: Recycled T-Shirts

Yesterday I had the joy of joys of happening upon a multi-family garage sale. They handed me a large paper bag and said I could shove as many items of clothing into it for only $5. Well, heck! I couldn't pass that up.

As I browsed the tables piled with clothes, I found a few t-shirts that were, well, not quite my size. But I knew just want to do with them: revamp, reuse, recycle! Here are some photos of how I made over two shirts. Totally easy, super fast, and quite fun.

Items needed:
T-shirts (helps if they are slightly bigger than you'd normally wear)
Scissors
Sewing machine (optional, but I like to have it on hand.)
Classic Rock (okay, optional. But fun!)

Basic Instructions:
1) Try the shirt on and see if you want to take it in on the sides, make cap sleeves, a tank top, etc.

2) Pinch the sides if you are going to take it in and estimate how much you'll need to go in. NOTE: Don't over do it unless you want a shirt that will fit like spandex. Not usually a good look...

3) Take that puppy off and start cutting (or sewing.) Easy does it while you're still getting used to the project. Cut a bit, try it on, sew a bit, try it on. You get it.

This tee was very boxy. Though you can opt to have the new seam showing by sewing it right-side-out, I turned this one inside-out to sew a more fitted inseam.

If the shirt fits at the underarms well, use the ready-made seam as a guide and don't sew deeper. This one fit great in the underarms, but was like a cardboard box in the bodice. Shazzam! Oooh, I got a new shirt on...

It's Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

This Batgirl shirt had a bleach stain on one shoulder (between sleeve seam and neck) and needed the sleeves revamped.

I cut an asymmetric boat neck to get rid of the regular collar and cut out the bleach stain. Chopped the sleeves to make caps, and check out what I did with the sliced off pieces...

I took a strip from the area I cut out of the neck, punctured two holes in the bottom left of the shirt, inserted the fabric strip and made a bow. The material is slightly gathered, creating a bit of a loosely fitted bodice, and I have a girlified retro tee!

POW! WHIZ! BANG!

Wristlet made from doubling one of the cut sleeves. Wick away that dew on a perspiring forehead with chilled style. Yeah, man.

That's how I roll.
It ended up being about 12 items for only $5, including a new pair of shoes, several scarves and some brand name dress shirts and sweaters. These two t-shirts? Estimating these revamped, thrifted styles put me out about $0.40 each.

Shop. Cut. Sew. Wear.

HIYAH! Judo Chop Fat: What Works for This Mama

First off, I have no miracle cure, no easy answers and no one-size-fits-all solutions to losing those last (or first) few pounds. BUT, I can share what helps me when I want to kick my jiggles to the curb. Like now. Today. It all (re)starts now.

1) Know thyself. I'm a cyclical kind of person. I get fit, stay there awhile, get burned out, eat whatever I want, subsequently gain a few pounds, then when my clothes start feeling too tight and I don't like how I look in the mirror I start back on a fitness kick. It's how I work. As I've gone through fit/unfitness cycles, I've learned a bunch about what works for me. So, I continue to....

2) I have to want it. As the "eat whatever I want" cycle goes on for a few weeks I notice the fat layering on. But it takes more than noticing to make me put down the donuts and pick up my running shoes. I have to really want to get fit and commit to a regimen.

3) Dramatic change. This week I'm christening my fitness kick with negating sugar, not eating after 8pm, consuming less wheat products, making healthier food choices and daily exercise. I know that I need to make a big change, and in two weeks I know I will see a big change when I commit (#2) to following through.

4) Get the Crap out of the Kitchen. The easiest way to make sure I eat healthy is to only have good food options around. I shop smarter and THROW AWAY THE CRAP in the CUPBOARDS. I know we shouldn't waste food, but seriously, I don't have to eat it if it's going to make me feel terrible about myself afterward. Just toss it.

5) Have Happy Foods. Healthy food doesn't have to taste like grass and cardboard. AMAZING. I don't believe in super foods, complete proteins or any fad diet foods. It's all about math: calories in = calories expended mean you stay the same weight. Expend more calories than you consume = burn calories. So, know some healthy meal and snack options that you enjoy. For kicks, I'll include a list of foods/meals I've found helpful.

6) I Have to Exercise. When I workout I naturally want to make healthier food choices. Hand in hand. When I see that package of cookies or the chocolate truffle recipe at my finger tips I think, "Do I REALLY want to have to run that off? Nope." Also, the endorphins that energize and also relax me after a workout are addictive. They make me happy, crave ice water, fresh produce, and 80's music. Okay, not the last one, but you get my point. Exercise is the key for me to keeping on the healthy track. It's my personal coach and I know I need it in my schedule at least 4 times a week to keep me going strong. Cardio and a mix of strength building exercises.

7) Healthy Expectations. It's often said that it's healthy to lose no more than 1 lb. a week. I don't often weigh myself and it's a good thing. Instead I go by how toned my tummy appears (since that's my trouble area) and how my clothes fit. Honestly, I wish they stopped selling scales, don't you? Guilt, guilt, guilt! Well, from garnered experience by being cyclical, I know that within 2 weeks of persistent, positive, proactive change I WILL see results. Everyone who does the same will, as well. To quote 'Anchorman,'... "and THAT's a SCIENTIFIC FACT!"

A few notes you don't want to skip over
-You can lose weight without exercise by simply changing your diet. It won't happen as quickly as combining healthy eating and some good cardio, but it will happen.

-Don't starve yourself. When you feel light-headed, eat, girl! Make sure you have healthy, quick options around so you don't cave when you're uber hungry. Guilty of that, and it makes me feel like a loser when I succumb to a poor food option to appease the grumblies in my tumblies.

-If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. But remember, ya gotta want it, otherwise you're just putting yourself through failure after failure and flogging yourself with guilt. Not. Cool. You're life is too short to be unhappy. Wait until you're ready (and see #4 and #5.)

-I started using smaller everything when dishing up. Smaller plates, bowls, even spoons when I'm eating something I really want to enjoy (not snarf down.) I even use the kids' bowls when I have cereal because it is closer to the serving size the box recommends.

Foods and Meals I Love

Breakfast Options:

2 poached/sunny-side-up eggs. (Spray the pan, plop the eggs, wait until the white are semi-solid, poor a few tables spoons of water around the edge of the pan, cover with lid until the yolk is cooked to your liking.)
GoLean cereal with 2 tablespoons of dried berries
A piece of fruit and a cup of tea or coffee with either above option.

Lunch Options:

Baked/Microwaved Potato with veggies and mozzarella. (Stab the potato several times, then microwave on high/normal for 3 minutes. Place cooked potato in a bowl, break it up a bit, place two handfuls of fresh spinach or 1/2 a sliced zucchini (coined) on top. Add 1/3 c shredded mozzarella. Microwave for an additional 2 minutes until cheese is melted.) Ketchup is nice :)
Add a salad! My current favorite is baby spinach, diced tomato, cucumber, 1 1/2 tablespoons of blue cheese, 1 tablespoon of sliced almonds and 2 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar drizzled over it. YUM! Gorgeous balance and blend of flavors.

Dinner Options:

Sliced tomatoes with fresh basil, drizzled balsamic. (See a trend? I'm big on balsamic and tomatoes.)
Homemade turkey, three bean chili
Hearty, lowfat, high vegetable and protein stews
Steamed veggies (DELICIOUS -do a medley of carrots, broccoli and cabbage. And open your windows at night so you don't kill yourself -or spouse- with high methane levels, yeah?)
Turkey sausage (we're big on turkey here. Cheaper and healthier than beef, for sure.)
Grilled pork chops (another massive fave here) with BBQ sauce to dip.

Snack Options and Meal Substitutes When I'm on the Run:

Apple slices with sharp cheddar and a cup of tea
Hot tea (especially when I start freaking out, wanting to eat any and everything. Calms this mama down in a heartbeat.)
Snicker's Marathon Bars (protein bars that taste YUM.) Add apple and bottle of water for great satisfaction.
Popcorn. Yeah, baby. I heart my air popper -and the kids love it!
Clif Bar's high protein Builder Bar. Like both Peanut Butter and their Chocolate. PB top choice.

So, I'm on through another cycle of fitness and looking forward to (big time) feeling exactly the way I want to. In two weeks.

Thrift Store Home Make Over: DIY Decor

Hidyho! While I may not be "completely" finished, the redecorating is well on its way to completion and I am loving my vivid (and thrifty) decor. Spring is the perfect time to freshen up the house and bring in some bold colors and bright ideas.
Here, filling out the area where I hung a grouping of retro book illustrations with family photos and a fabulous Mt. Rushmore souvenir plate.

Placemats (set of 4) from the thrift store brought in lots of bright colors. Placed the new "Sparkling Lemon" Yankee candle, freshly arrived yesterday from my wonderful mother, in my grandmother's depressionware pitcher using a silver platter I picked up years ago for a few bucks at another thrift store. Nice centerpiece that doesn't tempt my 3 year old to constantly want to light, then blow out, the candle.

Snuggly Sunday Donuts

Last night Wilder and I read a favorite book, On Market Street by husband/wife team Arnold and Anita Lobel. I discovered this book while working in my elementary school library, shelving L to Z in the children's storybook section. When I was pregnant with Wilder I scoured the internet and bought a used version on Amazon. Love it.

As it lists the various letters of the alphabet, "D" is for "donut." Right then we decided that when the sun woke up, we'd visit the donut shop. And here are our delicious doughy delights!

Confession: the baby bug has been biting me. Babies, babies, BABIES! When I told Brian that I wanted to revisit the idea of having number 3 in a few months he, well, let's just say he ran away in search of a chastity belt. *Sigh* We'll see.
For now, here's my gooey little poppet.

Big hit, a very bit hit. After devouring, oh, 5 of these beauties he literally ran in circles. You'd think he'd be a grand, chemical-free substitute for birth control, but I still want another. Someday. Soon...I think. (Oh, Briiiiiaaaaan, where aaaaaare youuuuuu?)

With all this redecorating I've been doing, I got a wild hare to paint. One trip to Walmart later and now I have the perfect accent piece for my developing gallery! Love the color -a mix between robin's egg and teal. By Friday I should have all the framed photos back from Hobby Lobby and the gallery should be well on it's way to completion! Photos to follow -yay!

Oh, and for those of you curious, it took about 2 cans of Krylon indoor/outdoor Bahama Sea in gloss to paint this small coffee table. Love it.

DIY Wall Art: Retro Illustrations From Thrift Store Books

My friend, Aubrey, had never been to The Caring Place. Today when she came over for a visit, I insisted we stop by one of the best thrift stores in Georgetown. Okay, THE best thrift store in Georgetown. Hands down.

Ever since redecorating Waverley's room and transforming it from cowboys to vintage/retro chic with those fun curtains and cut out letters, I've been on a mission to tackle the remaining blank walls -of which there are MANY. Okay, ALL of the walls.

We went to Hobby Lobby yesterday (digressing) and I brought 12 of my large prints used for photo display at bridal shows to have mounted and framed, taking advantage of their 50% off deal. Woohoo! In a matter of days I shall have some of my ultimate favorite prints on my walls, creating a gallery downstairs so clients can view and I can enjoy.

Though these prints will fill up a lot of the remaining wall space, there are still plenty of other areas that need filling in, which brings us right back to The Caring Place a few hours ago...

I purchased several books and magazines with the intention of (not burning) pillaging them for pictures to frame. To my delight we had all sorts of medium/small frames and mattes that I pulled from a storage closet and set to work selecting my favorite illustrations to fit my found frames.

This beauty cost a buck. The normal pages are great as a "backdrop" for featuring smaller illustrations as layers on top and the pictures, though either blue or red, are fun and full of adventure.

I thought these two paired nicely.

Waiting to acquire more frames and mattes before I hang these puppies. Will probably do the dinner scene and boy skiing and hang all four together in a square/rectangle.

Ahhhh, reminds me of Alaska. Home, sweet home.

I felt rather sacrilegious tearing up a perfectly good Dr. Seuss, but Wilder is really into his ABC's and you have to admit, having Dr. Seuss on your wall is pretty darn cool.

And now, let us take a moment to (nearly) completely go off topic. I bought these two crafty magazines for $0.50 each because some of the pictures were just TOO much. Thought I was going to frame some, but once I held up mattes to them I realized they were even too corny for my house. I have to share some of my favorites -with commentary.

"Honey, this sweater you made me is, well, I'm speechless. All I can do is attempt to set fire to both of ours with this cigarette."

This photo is noted as being taken aboard a Holland America cruise ship. That the spread was titled "All Aboard" and boasted where it was shot was enough for me.

"Come on, Helga, there's a cute diplomat over there getting a hotdog. Let's not stay with the general."
"But Henrietta, I enjoy his immensely boring stories about wars he never fought in. It's the only thing that has cured my insomnia."
"Fine. But I have to tell you, that dress makes you look fat."

Resuming business. This was a science textbook for grade schoolers in up-state New York. It was full of brilliant illustrations related to nature, science and surprisingly - some physics.

Reminding me of Wilder, watching the train in the valley below, I selected this from a full page spread.

A half page lake scene. It had good balance of activity, color and aesthetics.

This book was...OH LOOK, A SQUIRREL!

Uh. Sorry -totally forgot what I was saying.
Anyway.

The sun went down, the pictures went up. Here's a close up of a 4x6 collage I made from 2 books and lovely stamps from someone's letter. (Confession: In college I would go through the top several layers of garbage at the mail station to grab all the stamps I could find off discarded envelopes. I got some really neat ones from foreign countries. And I no longer dumpster dive.)

I know you were wondering when Dr. Seuss was coming into play. He's hanging out in the kids' bathroom and lookin' goooood. I kept the shot of the sunflowers from my mother's garden in Washington to make a happy trio.

Appropriate because A) our kids have "W" names, B) it IS a bathroom, after all.

Just a little too cute.

So, for pennies on the dollar, you can create your own unique, book-centric decor. Grab some frames from the thrift store or garage sales or recycle some you own to give a fresh look to any room!

Other good framable ideas and thrift store wall decor

-Hang plates! Thrift stores are always stocked with mismatched china, souvenir plates and ceramics that make great art when grouped together or added as an accent to angular decor.

-Frame sheet music! Enough said.

-Postcards and vintage photographs! These are typically best found at estate sales or antique stores ($1-$10.) My favorite I have framed in a collage format was $3 and it's always a joy looking at.

-Comics! This is how my friend, Cherie, decorated her little boy's room and it turned out uber cool.

-Cookbooks! Great illustrations and photos from vintage cookbooks are great to decorate your kitchen. Also a useful and cute idea to frame a few favorite recipes -you won't have to dig through your collection, just look at your wall. No more forgotten ingredients!

DIY Fashion: Thrift Store Style, Vintage Chic Advice

You can do it. With a keen eye and an idea of key pieces, you can build an economical wardrobe with oodles of fashion sense. Since retro is so "now now," there is no better place to shop than thrift stores to grab the true originals.

I was inspired by Victoria and Andrea, two sisters who are loaded with fashion sense and thrift style, bargain hunters to the core. Since then I've taken a wee bit of time to hit up my local Goodwill stores and have found a few gems.

Okay, now it's your turn! Don't be afraid of the racks and bins -use your shrewd money and style sense to create fun, new looks that won't break the bank. You can do it!

Suggestions for thrifting and garage sale hunting

-Watch out for wear. Avoid tired looking clothes with stains, holes or pilling that cannot be fixed.

-Create outfits with each new purchase. If you buy random items, the chances of you actually wearing them are slim if you don't already have the other pieces to make outfits out of. Be sure you can have at least one outfit from your new purchases before you call it a day.

-It had better fit. If it ALMOST fits, that's not good enough. Honestly, you're not going to wear it -or if you do, it will be ill-fitting and unflattering. If it's a great quality piece, commit to taking it to get altered that week. My $6 dollar blazer was originally over $100, so getting it fitted for $30-40 is nothing.

-Pace yourself. Make sure you hydrate, have some nutritious snacks and enough time to browse without stressing because hunting at thrift stores is challenging, though incredibly rewarding.

-Don't buy the store. Deliberate over items, carry the around with you as you continue to shop and try them on multiple times. Go with a girlfriend who's opinion you trust and you can help each other select the best options!

Fine Day for a Haircut {Jen Hoover at Pearl Salon, Austin, TX}

I am desperate -DESPERATE- for a haircut. Can you tell? Shaggy gal in need of skilled scissors and fresh color. Well, today I get to visit my sweet friend and stellar stylist, Jen Hoover, owner of Pearl Salon in Austin, TX.

I was hoping to go super short today, but am still waiting on final casting for a film that shoots in April so I can't go chop chop just yet. Soon, though. Mark my words.
We may have a little fun with the color (easily changed) so we'll see what Jen feels like today. I'm thinking dirty blonde? Heavy highlights? Or perhaps a safe, conventional chocolate colored gloss. Mmmm, anything with the word chocolate in it always sounds like a good idea.

So here we go. Three hours until I'm nestled in Pearl Salon catching up with one of the most vivacious and creative make up artists and hair stylists in Texas. Jen's always taking hip, trendy classes to stay up on the latest in hair styles and cutting techniques. New York, Dallas, she always seems to be just getting back from a course or convention. Or film set. Not yet in having hit 30 and she's working on opening a new expanded salon in Austin.
I love this girl.

DIY Baby Room Decor: Vintage Sheet Curtains & Name Art

I was recently inspired to do finally do something about Waverley's bedroom. She's been in Wilder's old room, 3 walls painted a sky/cornflower blue and brightly colored cowboy curtains with only 2 framed photos hanging randomly. It was sad, it was silly, it was rather pathetic. So....inspiration hit and I put my creative skills to some much needed use and Waverley now has an officially decorated room!

To create this simple Name Art wall decor:
1) Cut out letters from fun colored scrapbook paper. I bought a big sample set that were all within the same color tones, so it was easy to pick sheets that didn't look odd together.

2) Print out a few of your favorite photos and use bits of leftover scrapbook paper to create a fun collage for each photo. Staple or glue together.

3) Cut a long piece of twine or ribbon to hang the letters and photos on.

4) Use wooden clothes pins to clip letters and photos to the twine.

Tada! Now you've got an art project that fills up a wall, is super cute AND super cheap! Also a fun idea to make as a gift for birthdays (any age) and baby showers!

Vintage Bedsheet Curtains.

Every now and again I scour the linen bins at my favorite thrift store in search of some neat old sheets. They often remind me of vacations at my grandparents home; very comforting, and these finds make perfect (and inexpensive) gifts from blankets to clothing. Clothing I haven't quite gotten to yet, but curtains, blankets and bassinet pads, yes. I can sew straight lines. Okay, relatively straight lines...

How to:
This is embarrassingly simple. Hooray for that!

1) Taking a full or queen sized flat sheet, fold it hot dog style (vertically, right?) Measure the length needed to cover the window and give your self 4-6 inches extra to create the top hem. You'll put the curtain rod through that part, so make sure you have enough material to hem up there.

2) Once you've cut your desired length, cut down the center to create two curtains (unless, of course you want one, great, big sold curtain. If so, then ignore this part.)

3) Using your choice of ribbon and where you want to create your stripe, cut and pin the ribbon on each section of the curtains and sew 'em on.

4) Pin and hem the vertical sides of the curtains.

5) Pin and hem the top portion the curtain rod will go through. No need to hem the bottom since the sheet is already hemmed when purchased. Hooray for that, eh?!

6) Cutting 11" strips of ribbon, create bows and hand sew them on. This will take you all of 15 minutes to create the bows and attach them. Uber cute, uber fast.

Tada! Look at you! All snazzy, creative and thrifty! Joyous curtains in an instant.

I made a baby blanket and bassinet pad from this sheet and it's matching pillowcase before Waverley was born and they've become her favorite. When I was measuring the material for the curtains she kept squealing and trying to hug the sheet. I think she's quite pleased to be surrounded by her favorite material. And I'm glad that it only cost $2.00!

Eat My Cake, Baby! Banana Coconut a la Kelly

It was supposed to be plain ol' banana bread. But the traditional recipe I use was, sigh, upstairs somewhere (actually I know exactly where it is, I just didn't want to lose momentum) and I decided to just make it up.

Then it turned into....Banana Coconut Cake!

Kelly's Banana Coconut Cake
2 medium very ripe bananas
1/2 c melted butter
1 c granulated sugar
2 tsp. vanilla
3 large eggs
3/4 c vanilla yogurt
3/4 c applesauce
2 1/2 -3 c flour
1 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 1/2 c dried/shredded coconut (at last)
Optional: 1 1/2 c white chocolate chips

Mix wet ingredients together, add in dry ingredients and stir well. Then add in coconut and white chocolate chips (if desired), stir well.

Pour into a greased 9x11 pan or 2 greased loaf pans.

Bake at 350 degrees for 60 minutes (may need to bump it down to 325.)

When cooled I suggest topping with butter cream or cheese cream frosting. Or eat it plain with a cup of tea and it's...sorry, having trouble typing with my mouth full.

Headlines: Folks Flock from Boston and Houston to Visit Us!

Ha! I'd like to think we had that much pull, but we did get a wonderful treat visiting with my Aunt and Uncle from the Boston area who were in Texas to see Grandma and Grandpa in Houston. They graciously drove up to spend a few hours chatting and playing with the dynamic duo, some of which I captured here.

Uncle Tom assisting Waverley in discerning what goes in her mouth and what doesn't. "Seriously? Wood chips and top soil are a 'no'? Coulda fooled me," she seemed to say...

"So there's a guy on first and third and I see the pitcher throw this WILD curve ball and I'm like, 'Wha..?! Heck, I'm goin' for it -we gotta win this one for the Gipper!' So I'z gives it all I'z gots and, well, the rest was history, Uncle Tom. I'm tellin' ya. Shoulda been there." Sigh.

"And, well, THIS Spring I have big plans for this flower bed, Aunt Ruth. Big plans! First, I'm going to eat ALL this mulch -no matter what Uncle Tom says- and then... You know wood chips are really high in fiber. Great source. Read it in, uh... Anyway, back to this flower bed."

Four Goals for the Working Mom

I remember being a bit more goal-oriented; it wasn't that long ago. Ah, those were the days. My monthly goals such as reading, exercising, cooking, sewing, other things ending in "ing." What happened? Yes, yes, I recall I started an organization (Uncommon Women -a flash in the pan due to a new baby, etc.) and a new photography business. Spare time sort of went out the window, especially after taking the reigns as primary/shared bread-winner when Brian got out of the Army last spring. As I gather myself before the storm of wedding season, I want to gain some clarity and create some goals, both personal and professional, to help me not just survive, but get on track.

1) Exercise 4-5 days a week and make healthier nutritional choices.
Now that the weather is warming up it will be easier to get out with the kids and the jogging stroller. I also find drinking more hot tea, especially in the evening, is a huge stress reliever. Veggies and high protein foods will fill my plates and bowls and I'll strive to maintain the goal of not consuming calories after 7:30pm.

2) Playtime with the kids.
Brian is so much better at this than I am. Guys just seem to have that playtime fun built into them, whereas gals make the kids fed and relatively happy while doing 5 other things at the same time. Multi-tasking is great, but many times I'm doing pointless things. Close my computer windows, turn up the tunes, dance with the kiddos and wrestle on the carpet. Twenty minutes of playtime goes a LONG way for both mama and babies.

3) Network, Connect, Ask.
Let's don't be shy, Kelly. You own a business, people need photographers for various things, so seek and ye shall find, right? I hate being a sales woman and asking for people's money, but I gotta if we're going to eat. Thanks to Brian's steadfast encouragement, I am learning to value the skills I can offer and request correct compensation for my services. Developing my social networking skills, making the most of my hot leads (contacts who have expressed real interest in using my services,) and making the sale- just a few more goals in the list.

4) Rejuvenate.
It struck me last week that God requires 1 full day of rest for his people. Lately my idea of a day of rest is spending it catching up on household things or only working 4 hours a day instead of, say, 10. With work always in front of me (ah, my beloved computers) it's tough to rest. And sometimes (raise your hand, who's with me on this) it's impossible to take a break from the computer. I may be doing nothing significant, but I can certainly fill hours flitting from site to site, responding to facebook comments, writing my own, checking what's new in other people's lives and blogs (ahem.) To avoid burn out, I gotta rest and when I do it's got to be the real thing! Deep breath, glass of wine or mug of tea, time to ponder or read a book or seek inspiration. Or get romantic with white knight who lives here...

Alright, what I see here are 3 goals that have to do with slowing down and stress relief and one goal towards growing business. Though more business equals less free time, I think I can work with these. Being more productive during free moments and scheduled work hours will lend to freedom to embrace goals 1, 2 and 4.

Thanks, guys. I needed this. Another cup of tea and time for a spot of reading before turning in for the night. Goal #4 in the works...

Many 'O Bookings

A teeny bit thrilled, just had to share! So, Tuesday's audition for the announcement hostess for John Hagee's Cornerstone Church in San Antonio went incredibly well. Within a few hours of arriving back home I received an email from my agent saying that I had booked the job and they wanted to shoot ASAP. Today I had a round of callbacks for the Christian feature film shooting this spring (and another round on Saturday) and I'll hop in the car in a few minutes to head back down to San Antonio to shoot announcements for Feb/March. It is SO nice that their media department and John and Matthew Hagee have things planned so far in advance! Only having to make the trip and shoot one day per month is simply excellent!

The studios at Cornerstone's media studios are insane! I've been on set for ABC's General Hospital and all I can say is I definitely saw a similarity in the elaborateness of both set ups. Very nice...

Gathering outfits, accessories, shoes and caffeine for another long drive and afternoon full of doing just of my favorite things in the world -talking on camera :)

OH! OH! And more fun news -I am nearly at my wedding booking goal for 2011 and it's only February! Plus, with the Georgetown Bridal Show coming up next weekend, I have high hopes that by the spring I will be able to rest easy and focus on shooting and editing instead of promoting (though that always needs to happen, right? Right.)

We are so blessed. Work keeps coming in, new opportunities arise, things grow, and we're able to have lots of time together as a family. I am so thankful for this sweet life!

And...tomorrow we celebrate 6 years of marriage.
Life is good, amen and amen.

Rambling Valentine's Day!

As a self-employed, stay-at-home, work-from-home mama (how's that for hyphens?) it's challenging to seize a break, take time off, relax, just plain CHILL OUT. As I wrote before, January was ridiculously busy and blessed the whole family with severe head/chest colds christening the Month of Love. It stopped me in my tracks and commanded some chillaxing time while nursing everyone back to health. Heck, I even got to check out a few books from the library and bury my nose in a new P.D. James mystery (oh joy, oh rapture!) After two weeks, we're finally over this gunk (for the most part) and even though work has not stopped, I feel rested.

Today I throughly enjoyed some of the simpler things in life and tasted the fruits of accomplishment. While watching 4 wee ones ages 3 and under this morning, I cut out paper hearts, filled bowls with crayons and we gathered around the coffee table for a little Valentine making. Between doling out snacks, sippy cups and breaking up fights, the kitchen got cleaned, dishes done and several photography print orders that had been hanging over my head were processed. The baby girls bathed together (too cute for words) and kids tunes rocked the house while the boys bounced balloons on each other's heads.

After our little friends left and Waverley went down for a nap I got an urgent (random) email from The Parenting and Pregnancy Channel on iVillage asking if they could use the announcements I made for Waverley for their featured collection of DIY Birth Announcements. They wanted to publish today so I had to hustle, sending the photos, a list of supplies and type out instructions. They've agreed to link to my blog and send the article over (I'll include a link when I get it -excited to see the other examples!)

Our vehicle has taken us/me oh-so many places this last week. Okay, two places. Ha, funny story to me: Around the time we had our little snowfall that stopped Central Texas in its tracks, Wilder started asking to go see my grandparents in Houston.

"Gama, Gampa? Truck?" (repeat 10 times and that's what we heard 50 reps a day.)
"Thursday, Wilder. We'll go in the truck to Grandma and Grandpa's on Thursday, okay?"

Finally the blessed day came. Wilder was so excited to get in the truck, I didn't even have to talk him out of taking his morning bath he finds mandatory as long as he's heard/seen evidence that I'm taking/have taken a shower. "We can't take a bath right now, it's time to get in the truck for Grandma and Grandpa's."
"GAMA GAMPA?! OOOKAAAAY!!!" It was the easiest time I've ever had getting shoes on that kid and his rump in the car. He was SO excited.

Waverley, Wilder and I enjoyed one of the sweetest afternoons with my grandparents while Brian stayed home to work on the flooring in the studio (that last bit's the hardest to cut and hammer together.) The next day soon after waking Wilder asked if we could go back to Gama/Gampa's and he continues to ask several times a day.

We haven't seen Brian's family in over 6 months and the last we saw my mom and family seems like ages and I have ached for grandparent-type folks to enjoy these gorgeous and rascally bundles of joy, so when Wilder started requesting visiting my grandparents -and seeing how sublimely happy he was there and how sweet he was the whole next day- it did my heart so much good! I will gladly make the 2 1/2 hr. trip often with the kids just to enjoy these times with my dad's parents and have my children adored. Witnessing the happiness of all during our visits -*sigh*- that's what life is all about. Creating the best memories together and blessing each other's lives. Grandma and Grandpa, we love you soooooo much!

My other travels were shooting bridal portraits in San Antonio this past Saturday. I did the bride's hair and make up and we drove around town, scoping out unique areas to shoot in. Fire escapes on historic buildings, on the train tracks surrounded by industrial buildings and parked railroad cars. We even were lucky enough to have a train come RIGHT as we were finishing up and the shots of it chugging towards such a stunning bride are incredible -can't wait to share.

I'll be back south tomorrow for an audition in San Antonio for spokesperson/announcement gal for John Hagee's Cornerstone Church. One word: Caffeine. I know it's only a 2 hr. drive, but MAN, I always seem to have a hard time staying awake when I drive to San Antonio. Maybe because the road is so darn straight. Right down I-35. At least taking 290 to Houston, you've got little towns, some stop lights, lots of farm land, some ups and downs and easy, meandering curves in the road. And it's BEAUTIFUL when the blue bonnets are in season, lining the road and filling fields. Gorgeous.

Almighty, this has been one heck of a digression! Time for a run with the kids, then park playtime. Before Wilder (yet again) attempts to decapitate Waverley.

Wilder loves playing catch with Brian and even though we were all sick last week, that didn't take the spunkiness out of this group!

This morning I wanted to snag a few shots of my favorite son. I gave him the remote and set the camera on the tripod and we had a wee bit of fun.

Snow Day in Central Texas

The day I finished the last of my wedding edits (hooray for 4 weddings wrapped from December!) we ALL got sick. Severe head colds certainly have a way of stopping you in your tracks, hunkering down and focusing all of your attention on family (snotty, fussy, tired -and that was just me.)

Temperatures in Central Texas plunged early this week and this morning, as most of us are just beginning to feel better, we received a sweet gift outside. Snow.

Waverley snuggled up in her footie pajamas, ready for breakfast. We cooked our "restaurant breakfast" complete with banana-cinnamon pancakes, bacon, cheesy eggs, tater tots (in lieu of hashbrowns) and delicious coffee. Waverely particularly enjoyed her coffee this morning. I jest, I jive...

It took Wilder some convincing to get him to go outside to play in the snow. At first.

Yes, she is extremely delicious.

At the point where nothing can convince him -not even his frozen toes and fingers- to come inside. We have a confirmed snowaholic.

Cracks me up that we have palm trees in the background and snow. Cause for a little head scratching.

Beware the power arm of our 3 year old. Excellent aim, I tell you.

Two of my most favorite people in the world.

He would keep going and going and going if we didn't force him inside to prevent frostbite and another onset of illness. He's currently arguing with Brian about going to play at the park and then go to the slides at Burger King. All I can hear is, "Slides? Snow! Snow! Slides?! SLIDES! SNOW!" I guess arguing is not the word I'm looking for. Demanding, shall we say?

We'll see how negotiations go. As far as the snow, most of it has already melted by early afternoon, though the spots that have remained in shadow still have a bit of white fluffy stuff. Amongst the sniffles and coughs still sounding around the house (excuse me while I blow my nose) and Wilder's constant demands (for anything, really) there is a warm, cozy feeling of family solidarity and comfort that I am highly enjoying. Funny how I am actually glad we're all sick so I can stop working and enjoy my family, snot and all.
