Fauxmade maple syrup for your homemade pancakes? Easy.
Make a simple syrup by boiling 2 cups of water and 2 cups of white sugar, plus about 1/4 c brown. Careful not to over boil or you'll end up with hard candy.
Add several teaspoons of imitation maple flavoring and 1 tsp. vanilla extract (imitation butter flavoring would be nice, too, but I don't have any.) Add salt, to taste.
The most important thing is to not let it cook too long. I haven't mastered it yet since I just made it up this morning (someone surely has a more precise recipe somewhere) but I look forward to never having to go down the aisle at Walmart and sift through the choices of syrup looking for the right price and the right flavor.
